SIMPING IS AN EPIDEMIC (FOOD FOR THOUGHT)
There is a virus spreading across the world infecting all of us, How can it be stopped? ( And no, I am not talking about coronavirus I am talking about something far far worse........The rise of the Simp.
Scientists are working desperately on an anti simp vaccine, the epidemic continues
So what is a simp
Urban dictionary describes one of the definitions as "When you infatuate over women, allowing them to take over your mind and cause you to do things for them that you wouldn't normally do." (
First, let's look at stereotypical examples of what a simp is. We most likely picture an incel virgin telling a girl how beautiful she looks on her live stream while simultaneously emptying his bank account to show his appreciation of a woman he most likely idolises as a goddess. He could also adorn a fez and a neckbeard. To his left, he has a bowl of nachos and to his right a litre of mountain dew, and in the centre a premium bottle of high-quality organically sourced lube.
Here I have given a glaring example of what a simp is, however something darker going on, many of us may in fact actually be part of the problem.........
To understand the simp mentality, we need to understand the process of why people simp. I have created this nice little equation for you; Money plus time plus being over availbe=bewbies but does it mnnnnn?
If a man puts a woman above all else in is life-changing things that he would normally do just to accommodate his pursuit of her, he is a simp.
A simp will literally cast aside all the essential things in his life just to get a chance at getting some sugar walls. In a his mind he thinks that exciting these excess behaviours will make him more attractive but what he doesn't realise is that these behaviours are working against him. These behaviours cause him to a week of desperation, turning him into a poon golbin. A woman to a simp is the goddess Athena. The more desperate a simp becomes the more he lusts for vagina juice and female companionship. In doing this he fails and falls deeper into the pit if simpery.
How many times have you liked an Instagram post just because a girl was showing her cleavage or ignored your friends to spend time texting a female that has it has gone nowhere with. Any time you give validation and go above and beyond for a female just because you think she is attractive, you are therefore simping.
A counter-argument to this is that sometimes you need to be a simp to get laid, the truth of the matter is that is entirely false. If a woman is attracted to you, she will sleep with you in most circumstances. Physical Attractiveness is the Strongest Predictor of Initial Romantic Interest in Both Sexes; No Evidence Male Personality Plays Any Role for Women (Luo & Zhang, 2009). So with that logic, if a woman is attracted to you, there is no need to be a simp..
I know now it's isolation you are getting all lonely, and you are bored of pornhub, so you think it will be a good idea to start sending 100's of DMS to that special lady.
Are you always in her DMS, waiting for her texts, how quickly do you reply regardless of how long or short it takes for her to give her message. Do panic if she leaves you on seen? YEAH .......that means you are acting like Simp (pickup certified simp membership card). Do you really think you will stand out by being the thirsty guy that DMS her during a period where every other chode is doing the same thing
Films and pop culture have programmed us into thinking by giving all our attention to a girl we are going to get a happy ending. Those films show a lovable perhaps goofy gentleman chasing the girl but what they don't show us is what happens after the credits roll. Reality!...................
In romance films, the girl puts up a barrier, and in response to this, the guy goes out of his way to gain her admiration. In real life, we all know that the that when we don't give that "girl" much attention that is when she becomes interested.
Simping has consequences and here's why . Social media and dating apps have entirely turned the attraction dynamic between men and woman upside down. It has allowed any female to gain extremely unwarranted and high levels of validation and admiration because of men's behaviour without really having to do anything. Guys use social media and dating apps too, but they will never receive the same amount of validation and here's why. Men liked 61.9% of women on Tinder and women wanted a mere 4.5% of men on Tinder. So assuming we have a 7 out of ten female and 7 out of ten male. The female is going to get far more matches, meaning an increased ego and validation. This means that hypothetically a 7 out of ten female is now less attainable then she was before not due to her Attractiveness but due to her amount of choice she has. "Choice abundance in online dating results in daters, particularly women, immediately rejecting more hypothetical and actual partners (Pronk & Denissen, 2019)". The same thing can be seen on Instagram, hypothetically between looks matched male and females the female is always going to get far more validation and attention. Liking , swiping , dm'ing and only fans are all contributing to the simp epidemic. THEY ARE GETTING 100'S OR 1000'S OF MESSAGES
Look fellas it's like the stock market if everybody invests (with validation) then the stock is just going to go up and up. But unlike stocks, the returns ain't giving you much By over investing, you are helping to crash the market.
If you are on Tinder or any dating app stop liking girls that you don't find that attractive just because you are thirsty AF . If a girl puts up a post or story, don't be the thirsty chode that dm's her. In essence, stop feeding girls egos just because they are females.
In conclusion, simps are not just the select few that pay money to naked girls on cam, we have all been simps in the past or are currently acting like simps. Let's stop the madness before the collective actions of simps further change the relationships between males and females forever. As with global warming and pollution; we know how to stop it, so let us stop now..
Next time you see a girl on Instagram going "Boreeeedddd ask me anything?" Remember DON'T BE A MUFA FUCKING SIMP.

The word "copypasta" was first used on Usenet groups in 2006, being added to Urban Dictionary on 20 April 2006 and Encyclopedia Dramatica, a satirical internet culture wiki, in September 2006. According to Google Trends, the word "copypasta" was first used around April 2006.
The term "copypasta" is derived from the computer term "copy/paste", and can be traced back to an anonymous 4chan forum from 2006.
The Navy Seal copypasta is a lengthy, comically written, aggressive attack paragraph against a "kiddo", written in the voice of the stereotypical "tough guy", listing absurd accomplishments such as having "over 300 confirmed kills" and being "trained in gorilla warfare". This copypasta is often reposted as a humorous overreaction to an insult and is thought to have originated a post on a 4chan message board from 11 November 2010.
Main article: Bee Movie | Internet Popularity The Bee Movie copypasta dates back to 2013 where users would post the entire script of the Bee Movie onto websites such as Reddit and Tumblr. This was popularised around the time where edits of the film were first being posted and popularized on YouTube in late 2016.
PENGUINS ARE SLUTS!!! HOW DARE YOU NOT BELIEVE ME!!!!!!
I have so many stories but one springs to mind. First some background, I started dating him when I was 24 (I'm 25 now) and he was 23 (he's now 24 but mentally 5 years old). We were together for a year and a half. When we were together for around 6 months I got into my dream college and dream course that I had to leave a few years ago because of my mental health. He knew that I was going to reapply even before we were dating. I should say that my college is in Cork and we are both from Dublin so it would be around 200 miles away from home and him. He was extremely supportive at the start but as time went on and I was studying more and making friends he became extremely pissed off that I was studying "too much"... I'm studying Veterinary Nursing which is an extremely hard job and that I wasn't "spending enough time with him". Keep in mind that I would go back to Dublin pretty much every weekend on Friday evenings and then I would go into town so that I could meet up with him after I had lectures until 3pm and then I was studying my notes on the train for 3 hours. We would sit and have coffee together until all the coffee shops closed and then I would make it back to my parents and fall asleep because I was wrecked!
So one day near the end of our relationship we were talking on WhatsApp about penguins. I can't remember how we got talking about penguins but I think everyone can agree that penguins are extremely cute. He started to go off on a rant about how" yeah they are cute but they are also sluts"!!! I was extremely confused by what he was going on about so I asked him to clarify. He said it's because they sleep around and have sex with anything. He then included a screenshot of Merriam-Webster definition of the word and also urban dictionary. At this point I thought he was joking so I said something like LOL with emojis. He did find it funny AT ALL! He said that he was disappointed in me for not knowing better. One of my modules for my college is Animal Behavior and literally a few days ago we were learning about courtship behavior and how some animals are monogamous, polygamous or if they where polyandry. I told him this and that penguins were monogamous. He then said that he read an article online saying that they polygamous (in his eyes that means they are sluts). I asked him if he knew the name of the article because I was interested in the article. He then said that he couldn't remember the name of it which is bullshit. Gavin remembers EVERYTHING! He then said that his feeling were hurt because I was believing my collage lecturer over him, the man that I love. I was like "Well she does have a degree in ethology (Animal Behavior) and you don't, so I think I'm going to trust her over you". At this point in our relationship I was sick and tired of him constantly putting me down and my old shiny spine had started to resurface. He then went on an extremely long tangent about "How DARE I believe her over him, blah, blah, blah". For the rest of MONTH whenever I would talk to him either in person or via WhatsApp he'd act like a 3 year old who didn't get their way.
Let me know if you guys want any more stories about my ex and his entitled ass
TLDR - my ex boyfriend was extremely pissed off that I would trust my college lecturer over him
Negotiating the waters of a new relationship
So first go: Tinder. What. The. Actual. Fuck. That place was a zoo full of creeps who just wanted a “unicorn” to spice up their marriage. After looking that term up on urban dictionary I quickly deleted tinder for good.
Round two: Her. This app is just for finding the fairer sex. And that I found. I also found a lady who seemed great and I was into her in a pretty fierce way..:that is until she brought up that she relied on a dog spiritualist to commune with the past lives of her dog. I laughed. Apparently she was serious about that and well, that ended quickly. I also met a few other lasses that were fine (read: normal), but just didn’t click.
Round three: Bumble. Okay so despite being supposedly a place that puts the selection power into the hands of the female (ladies make the first move) I only found a fellow with a foot fetish and guys who thought it was okay to send all the dick pics. Being one who is not always enamored with the male member that was just gross. WTF. What kind of person would want to see anyone’s genitalia on a phone without asking for it. Not a great surprise, but I digress.
Round four: Hinge. So there was the guy who was an “artist” but really wasn’t. And then the lad who was at least 40 pounds and ten years more than his photos had led me to believe. I was about to throw in the towel. And then I met someone. He’s normal!!!!!!! He is caring. He’s got his shit together. He wants my late husband as “part of our relationship.” We talk about him but not too much. He accepts me. He’s an LGBTQ+ ally.
I’m not claiming victory yet. No waving a flag over an aircraft carrier declaring “mission accomplished.” But for now I’m happy. Who knows where this will go, but it’s made me feel less broken. To him I’m someone who has suffered a loss, but that’s also just a part of me, not the only only thing that defines me.
So for everyone who is wading through the uncharted and often sketchy waters of online dating, it gets better. There are some duds out there, but I think there’s also great people who can help build a future on the foundations we all built with our late significant others.
I look forward to see what the future holds now. Even if it isn’t forever this has taught me so much. Plus frankly, it’s nice to have a reliable source of a good old fashioned shag when you want it. My collection of vibrators will be a little lonelier these days. And thank god for that. 😉
Anyone else had successes or failures they’d care to share about online dating as a widow/widower? I’d love to hear about them all!! Love you all btw. This sub has really become a little reddit family for me.
Why ‘social justice warrior,’ a Gamergate insult, is now a dictionary entry
For those following the controversy and its diaspora, that particular addition to the dictionary was interesting. It is very, very difficult to find a reliable accounting of what the phrase actually means, and to whom it refers precisely, and why.
And that’s almost certainly because the word came into the mainstream during Gamergate, an online backlash against progressive influence in gaming which cannot be described neutrally in one sentence. Its supporters say the whole thing was really about ethics in gaming journalism, but the movement gained widespread attention for a subset of Gamergate’s supporters, who conducted several troubling harassment campaigns against women in gaming and journalists.
If the gaming community is taken as a complete, multi-celled organism, then this debate becomes an argument over who gets to control its immune system. To call someone a “social justice warrior” in this context is to label that person as an invading force, a target for the white blood cells. They are unwelcome outsiders, seen as threats to the health of the entire body.
[The only guide to Gamergate you will ever need to read]
Many gamergaters have taken to explicitly using the language of cancer to discuss their issues with progressive gamers. But looked at another way, by the women and progressives being called a “social justice warrior,” the oncology becomes an autoimmune disorder: the immune system is attacking a healthy portion of its own body. It is, at its heart, an argument over what a gamer is, and who gets to say so.
Here’s how “social justice warrior” became a part of that debate.
When it was a compliment
More than 20 years ago, the term was generally used as a neutral or even complimentary describer. Here’s a clip from a 1991 write-up of a Montreal jazz festival, from the Montreal Gazette:
[Quebec guitarist Rene] Lussier will present the world premiere of his ambitious Quebecois mood piece Le Tresor de la Langue, which juxtaposes the spoken word — including sound bites from Charles de Gaulle and Quebec nationalist and social-justice warrior Michel Chartrand — with new- music noodlings.“All of the examples I’ve seen until quite recently are lionizing the person,” Katherine Martin, the head of U.S. dictionaries at the Oxford University Press, said in an interview last month. Because “Social Justice Warrior” is currently only in Oxford Dictionaries — and not in the Oxford English Dictionary itself — lexicographers there haven’t done a full search for its earliest citation. But a cursory search for the phrase turns up several positive uses, spanning from the early ’90s through the early ’00s.
Baptist minister, the Rev. James Obey Sr.’s, 1992 obituary in the Houston Chronicle was titled, “Social justice warrior dies.” In 2007, “Social Justice Warrior” Monsignor David Cappo was honored with an award. And lawyer-turned filmmaker Ana Kokkinos told a newspaper reporter in 2009 that “what attracted me to law at that age was the idea of being a social justice warrior.”
There are a few negative uses that pop up, like a 2007 anti-multiculturalism editorial in the Baltimore Sun that characterized some workshops for teachers as a place where “presenters instruct teachers to go back to their schools and become social justice warriors.” But the balance is overall positive.
“Social Justice Warrior’s” older siblings
So how did Social Justice Warrior become an insult? Since Social Justice Warrior is still pretty new to lexicographers, Martin didn’t have a definitive answer.
Online, it’s hard to do the archaeology because there seems to be some confusion over the when the specific term emerged — as opposed to when different online communities began to discuss issues of racial and gender representation. KnowYourMeme says that the anti-social justice warrior blogspot site “SJWar” has entries as early as 2009, or around the time of a major debate within the sci-fi writers Livejournal community over racial representation in the genre.
But when the Intersect asked “SJWar’s” owner Will Shetterly, a science fiction and fantasy writer who published a book in 2014 detailing his many objections to and encounters with social justice warriors over the years, he said the title for his blog came much later than 2009. He guessed that it might have come from an old macro, “Social Justice Sally,” that has its own Tumblr dating back to early 2012.
There’s a similar term on TV Tropes, for “Soap Box Sadie.” Although TV Tropes goes way back, it’s not clear exactly when that entry was created.
Shetterly also said that he might have first found a definition for the phrase on Urban Dictionary.
2011: The likely turning point
Although Martin isn’t entirely sure when “Social Justice Warrior” switched from a primarily positive term to an overwhelmingly negative one, the year 2011 seemed to be a turning point. That’s the year, Martin said, the insult first appeared on Twitter. And it’s when UrbanDictionary user poopem composed an entry for it. “It looks like it was the year that social justice warrior flipped,” Martin said.
Sweden’s Famously Stealthy Submarine Is Now Even Quieter
What's the difference inSweden and Switzerland. Switzerland has an economy more like The United States. They complain over there that the Franc is overvalued and they are not paid enough to live. Sweden has progressive taxation and income distribution and has a more stabler economy because of it. Stockholm is the Capital of Sweden since 1523 A.D. It shares the Scandinavian Peninsula with Norway. Coming up is the Difference between Norway and Normandy.
Here's a map of Sweden and Norway:
Location of Sweden Map from Encyclopedia Britannica Online.
Encyclopedia Britannica States," The country has a 1,000-year-long continuous history as a sovereign state, but its territorial expanse changed often until 1809. Today it is a constitutional monarchy with a well-established parliamentary democracy that dates from 1917. Swedish society is ethnically and religiously very homogeneous, although recent immigration has created some social diversity. Historically, Sweden rose from backwardness and poverty into a highly developed postindustrial society and advanced welfare state with a standard of living and life expectancy that rank among the highest in the world. Here's what The CIA World FactBook has to say about Sweden: (Here are some highlights):
Sweden’s small, open, and competitive economy has been thriving and Sweden has achieved an enviable standard of living with its combination of free-market capitalism and extensive welfare benefits. Sweden remains outside the euro zone largely out of concern that joining the European Economic and Monetary Union would diminish the country’s sovereignty over its welfare system.
Timber, hydropower, and iron ore constitute the resource base of a manufacturing economy that relies heavily on foreign trade. Exports, including engines and other machines, motor vehicles, and telecommunications equipment, account for more than 44% of GDP. Sweden enjoys a current account surplus of about 5% of GDP, which is one of the highest margins in Europe.
GDP grew an estimated 3.3% in 2016 and 2017 driven largely by investment in the construction sector. Swedish economists expect economic growth to ease slightly in the coming years as this investment subsides. Global economic growth boosted exports of Swedish manufactures further, helping drive domestic economic growth in 2017. The Central Bank is keeping an eye on deflationary pressures and bank observers expect it to maintain an expansionary monetary policy in 2018. Swedish prices and wages have grown only slightly over the past few years, helping to support the country’s competitiveness.
In the short and medium term, Sweden’s economic challenges include providing affordable housing and successfully integrating migrants into the labor market.

Britannica states: " For many outsiders, Switzerland also evokes a prosperous if rather staid and unexciting society, an image that is now dated. Switzerland remains wealthy and orderly, but its mountain-walled valleys are far more likely to echo the music of a local rock band than a yodel or an alphorn. Most Swiss live in towns and cities, not in the idyllic rural landscapes that captivated the world through Johanna Spyri’s Heidi (1880–81), the country’s best-known literary work. Switzerland’s cities have emerged as international centres of industry and commerce connected to the larger world, a very different tenor from Switzerland’s isolated, more inward-looking past. As a consequence of its remarkably long-lived stability and carefully guarded neutrality, Switzerland—Geneva, in particular—has been selected as headquarters for a wide array of governmental and nongovernmental organizations, including many associated with the United Nations (UN)—an organization the Swiss resisted joining until the early 21st century. "
According to CIA"S World Factbook. Switzerland's Economy is as such:
Switzerland, a country that espouses neutrality, is a prosperous and modern market economy with low unemployment, a highly skilled labor force, and a per capita GDP among the highest in the world. Switzerland's economy benefits from a highly developed service sector, led by financial services, and a manufacturing industry that specializes in high-technology, knowledge-based production. Its economic and political stability, transparent legal system, exceptional infrastructure, efficient capital markets, and low corporate tax rates also make Switzerland one of the world's most competitive economies.
The Swiss have brought their economic practices largely into conformity with the EU's to gain access to the Union’s Single Market and enhance the country’s international competitiveness. Some trade protectionism remains, however, particularly for its small agricultural sector. The fate of the Swiss economy is tightly linked to that of its neighbors in the euro zone, which purchases half of Swiss exports. The global financial crisis of 2008 and resulting economic downturn in 2009 stalled demand for Swiss exports and put Switzerland into a recession. During this period, the Swiss National Bank (SNB) implemented a zero-interest rate policy to boost the economy, as well as to prevent appreciation of the franc, and Switzerland's economy began to recover in 2010.
The sovereign debt crises unfolding in neighboring euro-zone countries, however, coupled with economic instability in Russia and other Eastern European economies drove up demand for the Swiss franc by investors seeking a safehaven currency. In January 2015, the SNB abandoned the Swiss franc’s peg to the euro, roiling global currency markets and making active SNB intervention a necessary hallmark of present-day Swiss monetary policy. The independent SNB has upheld its zero interest rate policy and conducted major market interventions to prevent further appreciation of the Swiss franc, but parliamentarians have urged it to do more to weaken the currency. The franc's strength has made Swiss exports less competitive and weakened the country's growth outlook; GDP growth fell below 2% per year from 2011 through 2017.
In recent years, Switzerland has responded to increasing pressure from neighboring countries and trading partners to reform its banking secrecy laws, by agreeing to conform to OECD regulations on administrative assistance in tax matters, including tax evasion. The Swiss Government has also renegotiated its double taxation agreements with numerous countries, including the US, to incorporate OECD standards.

2: What is the difference between the newsgroup and listserv?
The newsgroup comp.infosystems.gis is a Usenet special intrest news
distribution scheme that allows individuals with access to Usenet
to read and post articles. The system is somewhat like e-mail
but involves a network of news 'feeds' that pass the news along.
The listserv system is a mailing list of e-mail addresses which
allows members to send messages to the GIS-L mailing list. The
GIS-L mailing list consistes of a large number of people
interested in GIS who receive GIS related articles using their
normal e-mail software. The GIS-L mailing list is maintained by
the listserv software and by the human David Mark who is the
manager of the GIS-L mailing list.
Articles sent to either of the above will be sent to the other so
there is no need to post to both groups.
It is important that people remember that messages to GIS-L end
up on Usenet and those with Usenet access should read new user
information in the news.announce.newusers group. One highlight to note
is that while product information can be valuable to a group, please
post only one article per product, as this should not become a
commercial advertisement center.

OzGIS is a software system for displaying geographically referenced
data, such as Census data, as maps and diagrams on screens, printers
Digitised map data (e.g.Census boundaries, GIS) and attribute data
(e.g. sales, environmental) are accepted as Ascii files and preprocessed
(e.g. amalgamation, line thinning, polygon construction, subsetting)
before display. Maps of polygons, lines and points can be displayed
according to one or two attributes along with various overlays. About 80
provide extensive options for interactively designing the layout and
appearance of the map, and for attribute handling, classification,
interrogation and saving maps. Maps can be output on plotters,
printers and various file types.
OzGIS is distributed as a "shareware" system.
OzGIS is very extensive, (it is the product of over ten man-years effort),
but also very cheap at A$100.

organization is as follows:
Initiatives - Papers/Reports related to specific initiatives which
are not considered "Technical Reports".
annual-reports - NCGIA annual reports in both plain text and
new-reports - Temporary repository for new reports being submitted
for public FTP from ncgia.ucsb.edu.
tech-reports - Selected NCGIA Technical Reports in both plain text
and postscript form.
dems - USGS CTOG DEM files. (From Mark Kumler)
etc - Other random programs and files which are being made
available for public FTP.
Some directories have subdirectories of "text" and "postscript".
When these are present, they contain the papers/reports in plain
ascii text and in Adobe Postscript(*) forms respectively.
Under tech-reports/text and tech-reports/postscript there are
plain text and postscript forms of the Publication list (named
"pub-list.txt" and "pub-list.ps" respectively). These can be used
to determine the publication number. Then the publication can be
retrieved using that number to locate the file.
Some technical reports have separate "title" and "body" sections.
Both of these should be retrieved and the "title" section should
be placed before the "body" section after printing. Some
technical reports have whole subdirectories. In this case, all
files in the subdirectory should be retrieved, printed, and
ordered according to the numerical sequence of the filename.

7: What are the United States map accuracy standards?
>From: [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) (Robert White)
United States National Map Accuracy Standards
With a view to the utmost economy and expedition in producing maps
which fulfill not only the broad needs for standard or principal
maps, but also the reasonable particular needs of individual
agencies, standards of accuracy for published maps are defined as
- Horizontal Accuracy. For maps on publication scales larger
be in error by more than 1/30 inch, measured on the publication
scale; for maps on publication scales of 1:20,000 or smaller, 1/50
inch. These limits of accuracy shall apply in all cases to
positions of well-defined points only. Well-defined points are
those that are easily visible or recoverable on the ground, such
as the following: monuments or markers, such as bench marks,
property boundary monuments, intersections of roads, railroads,
etc.; corners of large buildings or structures (or center points
of small buildings); etc. In general what is well defined will
also be determined by what is plottable on the scale of the map
with 1/100 inch. Thus while the intersection of two road or
property lines meeting at right angles would come within a
sensible interpretation, identification of the intersection of
such lines meeting at an acute angle would obviously not be
practicable within 1/100 inch. Similarly, features not
identifiable upon the ground within close limits are not to be
considered as test points within the limits quoted, even though
their positions may be scaled closely upon the map. In this class
would come timber lines, soil boundaries, etc.
- Vertical Accuracy, as applied to contour maps on all
the elevations tested shall be in error more than one-half the
contour interval. In checking elevations taken from the map, the
apparent vertical error may be decreased by assuming a horizontal
displacement within the permissible horizontal error for a map of
that scale. 3. The accuracy of any map may be tested by comparing
the positions of points whose locations or elevations are shown
upon it with corresponding positions as determined by surveys of a
higher accuracy. Tests shall be made by the producing agency,
which shall also determine which of its maps are to be tested, and
the extent of such testing.
- Published maps meeting these accuracy requirements shall note
National Map Accuracy Standards."
- Published maps whose errors exceed those aforestated shall omit
- When a published map is a considerable enlargement of a map
stated in the legend. For example, "This map is an enlargement of
a 1:20,000-scale map drawing," or "This map is an enlargement of a
1:24,000-scale published map."
- To facilitate ready interchange and use of basic information
manuscript maps and published maps, wherever economically feasible
and consistent with the uses to which the map is to be put, shall
conform to latitude and longitude boundaries, being 15 minutes of
latitude and longitude, or 7.5 minutes or 3-3/4 minutes in size.

9: What is this SDTS thing?
> from: esri!marlow![email protected] (Peter Aronson)
SDTS is a large complex standard, including many elements not
contained in most other transfer standards: a feature coding system
with thousands of codes; data quality information (although DIGEST and
VPF both also can carry this); a complete attribute data dictionary
(required for attributes that are not part of the built-in feature
Where most standards will specify a standard way of representing a
spatial object, SDTS usually species half a dozen. For example,
Lines can be represented using X,Y coordinates, X,Y,Z coordinates or
as sequences of other linear features, including curves. They may be
specified as planar or nonplanar. They may have left/right polygon
information and they may have start and end node information, both, or
neither. (And unfortunately, since SDTS node objects are allowed (but
not required) to have a coordinate, it is unclear whether the first
and last coordinate of a line with node information is stored on the
node only, or is redundantly stored on the line as well).
SDTS was at one time clearly intended to be a US-only standard: an
earlier version of the standard only allowed Lat/Long, UTM and State
Plane coordinate systems. However, it now allows additional
transformations to be defined using projection information (either by
storing projection parameters as attribute, with their meaning stored
in the data dictionary (not to be confused with graphic codes which
also can have their meaning stored in the data dictionary)), or by
using sets of transformation points (rubber-sheeting is left as an
exercise for the reader).

Open Letter to the MTG community.
I would like to share my thoughts with You and ask for Your opinion.
First things first: my name is Andrea and I'd like to share some thoughts and considerations with You and, hopefully, we'll be able to do one step further towards the solution of a problem that is lingering and growing in the darkness.
That problem is, to my understanding, ignorance and fear.
You should read this if:
- You care about the Magic environment, love the game and want it to be great
- You are interested in the equilibrium of personal rights, for all people
- You want to contribute to the discussion regarding inclusion, exclusion and opinions.
If You are in a hurry, I suggest You to read only the last part.
If You would like to read the whole thing - around 10 pages - I thank You in advance for your patience and good will. I hope You’ll find it interesting.
Before going into the details, I would like to start by saying something INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT to me:
THIS IS NOT a message against Wizard of the Coast.
THIS IS NOT a message against Channel Fireball.
THIS IS NOT a message against the Judges.
THIS IS NOT a message against the LGBTQ (you can add any letter here and still be truth!) community.
THIS IS NOT a message against someone.
If while reading the following You'll feel like it is against someone, PLEASE!, READ the five sentences above again, and then read them one more time.
THIS IS MY PERSONAL OPINION.
This is nothing more and nothing less than my personal opinion.
Some thoughts I know for a fact are shared with other people.
If you would like to share Yours, I'll read it.
Please DO NOT fall into the easy traps of online communication.
Trolls and Flames are always ready to burst.
My suggestion is to not engage with the Trolls (but we love trolls! I know..),
just feed them and give them a virtual hug.
I'm sure some of you might already know, but this is the context: Magic Fest Bologna 2019 (GP for the nostalgic). First Legacy GP in Italy (thank you Mengu! ^^).
My friends and I decided to start testing.
Test early and test hard.
We gathered every tuesday evening, for more than a year, in a known shop in the north of Italy (not far from Milan) and we started testing. We tested by ourselves the other days of the week, online and offline, and we tried to attend the most tournament possible during the weekends.
We were excited about the MF. We tested. We had fun. We laughed. We planned the trip, booked the hotels and made arrangements to see all the other friends (from the rest of Italy and from the whole world -hi guys!-). Because Magic is Friendships. At least for us.
As sometimes happens, we decided to give ourselves a name and form a team.
It was good for morale and for creating a group.
Here is where things start to get tricky.
The name of the team is "Solo la Punta" which translates in english with "Just the Tip" or "Only the tip".
Now, I know you want to start writing and giving explanations and you are ready to jump to conclusions, but please, hold your horses. I promise it will get even better.
THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME
Despite many of you would claim to already know where the name come from, I have bad news: no one, except us from the team, knows the truth. Our truth.
Excusing myself with my teammates for revealing this "secret", I'll share this information with you all.
The name came from a conversation happened during another tournament where one of us (that shall remain anonymous unless he decides otherwise), was NOT listening to word we were saying. It was a conversation about pizza (such italians! very pizza! much topic!) and while three of us were talking about pizza slices he, OUR VERY OWN HERO, out of nowhere, out of context, exclaimed, with incredible enthusiasm: "mia mamma solo la punta" ("my mother just the tip!").
We had no idea what he was talking about.
Or what he was thinking.
Or why he was so enthusiastic while saying that.
Or why he never listen (we still love you, but you never do!).
He told us those simple words with such conviction, like someone who had just bestowed vital knowledge upon us.. we burst into laughters.
We started laughing so hard, all of us, and kept laughing for a good couple of minutes. One of the best moments of said tournament.
It was such a nonsensical outburst, but said with such conviction and tone, that no one else, except him, could have said any better.
You know the things that make you laugh, without reasons?
Laughing because of friendship, tones and timing? Things that - once explained - don't really make other people laugh? This is one of those things.
It was an inside joke, should have remained an inside joke. But no, things happened.. and I felt the need to write this open letter.
If you think this is it, think again.
Once we told the other friends about this story, we all agreed it was something funny, so funny we had to name our team "solo la punta" (as said "just the tip").
Why, you ask? Because that's what magic was for us, months ago.
A fun and smart and marvelous game, but also a pretext to see your friends, have a laugh, together, and build friendships.
"Just the tip" had other meanings for us as well, from "the tip of the iceberg" which were the problems we had to overcome when choosing the date and schedule for test/tournament, to the problems to correctly plan the bookings (more than 20 people in the end), to another inside joke that I have no interest in sharing atm and you have no interest in reading.
From the difficulties in choosing the image for the playmat to the "only the tip" interpretation as "e il resto mancia" ("take the rest as tip"), meaning if I defeat you in the tournament, I'll give you just the tip ("restaurant" meaning, you dirty-minded friends!).
It wasn't the greatest of sentences, but hey, we didn't have to justify the reasons, our reasons, to pick a name for the team. To no one. It was and still is the name of OUR team we were talking about, right? Wrong! It became much more.
Please note that not every member of the team speak in perfect english (should I say none?), so some of the meanings can appear a bit "stretched", but guess what? We are italians and english is our second (when not third) language.
Please take note of this, it will get useful later on.
None of the meanings of our team name, OUR meanings, were the ones presented by the blogpost written by a judge that was present at MF Bologna 2019 and that - to be extremely precise - said that he/she/it/them/they had searched on Google for the meaning. I write he/she/it/them/they ironically, since this is one of the points of this open letter: assumptions.
Let’s put it there for a second, I don’t want to write the name of said judge (because of privacy and it’s not important here), but I also don’t want to assume gender. Am I supposed to write he/she/them all the time? It’s a burden. And a useless one. I believe it’s important to be able to speak freely and - as important as freedom - to make mistakes without being publicly executed.
Since this is all based on assumption, wouldn’t it be best if one can simply use the pronoun it feels correct and then, if the other person asks to be referred to as another pronoun, decide if doing the courtesy or not?
But let’s stay on track for now and keep with the problem: ignorance.
The judge didn’t know what that sentence meant (who could have known?) and searched.
Yes. Searched. On Google.
I would like to suggest, next time, maybe, ASK US first?
Since, you know, we are the team "Just the Tip" and we designed the Playmat..maybe the first answer from the urban dictionary (or whichever website You decided was better and more trustworthy than Us) is not the correct one.
IF there will be a next time.
But let's stick to the facts first.
The team Solo la Punta has a Playmat (Oh, boy!)
During one of many of those tuesdays, to go for a personalized playmat.
Never we had guessed that this decision, shared by us all, 10 people (it's not easy to make 10 Italians agree, next time you try!), would have proved so painful.
THE IN-FAMOUS PLAYMAT
We decided to use a picture that had meaning to us.
Since it would have been (and still is) the "official team playmat", the requirements were many, and not easy to satisfy:
-it had to be a picture that we ALL liked
-a picture that meant something
-a picture that had a link with the team name
Moreover, a picture that would have made our opponents happy to play against us.
Why? Because some of us didn't really care about winning the MF.
To some it was the first GP (ever!), and just wanted to have fun, experience the "GP feeling" that the "veterans" of the team shared in the stories.
Even in case of defeat (yes, we would prefer to win!), we would have offered “a nice view”, OR AT LEAST A LAUGH at the opponent.
- About this - we had a blast! Despite what happened, The majority of our opponents proved to be enjoying the Playmat, so much. Just to point a few examples:
my very first opponent in the main event laughed and complimented me on the playmat, the gentleman next to me asked if it was on sale and many, many more (love you all!) congratulated us and welcomed the playmat with the spirit it was intended for: bringing a smile.
THE HISTORY BEHIND THE PICTURE
I couldn't resist. The real link is a couple of rows below, but we'll get there.
Some of you might have recognized it, some might have no idea,
let me be PERFECTLY clear:
The picture was taken by a professional photographer (Terry Richardson), not us.
IT was taken during a Photoshoot.
The original is published on the ROLLING STONE magazine.
ON THE COVER, of the Rolling Stone magazine. In 2009.
The title of the article (guess what? we did some research and we read the entire article, BEFORE choosing the image) is: "the Nasty Thrill of Gossip Girl".
Oh. Haven't I mention it already?
It was taken to promote a TV SERIE. Gossip Girl.
The same tv serie that some of the girls that we are lucky to call girlfriends, watched.
Yes, the same tv serie that some of us of the team were "forcefully obliged" to watch, because our BAEs made us watch it.
The things we do for Love..
So, among the many possibilities, we decided to go with THAT precise image because it had something that our girlfriends (or boyfriends, we don't care what team you're on ^.^) would approve. Something that would have REMINDED us of our loved ones.
I know some of you might think this is far fetched, but it's not really the point to "justify" the reasoning that led to the choice of that image.
We could have just says "because we liked it" and it should have sufficed,
but no, this playmat HAD to have meaning.
THIS IS TRUE AND I CAN PROVE IT.
Fearing that people could only think of it as the new "calendario Michelin" ("playmate calendar"), we decided to overlay the image with a dotted layer.
Not just a dotted layer. A triple dotted layer. In PINK.
Not just that! The dots are not just dots, are the tiniest ice cream balls you can imagine.
Or penises. It's really hard to tell. But if you zoom enough you can see the dots are in fact three linked circles.
The naked eye cannot see it unless you go less than 10 cm (add inches for non-metric readers) from the playmat.
The logo is a DAMN UNICORN. You know why?
Because not all of us in the team are straight. Not all are gay. Not all are binary.
You know this also should NOT concern you, yes? Good. Let's get moving.
The unicorn was a symbol chosen carefully because it represented US.
Also, the unicorn has a pointy tip, hence it was the perfect mascot for our team.
At the location, there was an ice cream kiosk (noice!).
And people, in Italy, cannot resist Ice cream (really, who can?).
A judge, but more importantly a friend, a person which I highly respect and admire because he is a gentleman, a smart man and most of all an honest man, said the following provocation: should the organizer (CFB) ask every person that eats the ice cream to leave the building? Or ask to leave only people that eat the ice cream provocatively? Or only woman that eats ice cream provocatively? Let’s leave this for what it is. A smart provocation. But there’s some truth in it. A lot.
And it allows me to bring up another topic: clothing and personal items. It is known that clothing that are “too much”, for instance a sweater that depicts nudity, or sexual imageries, will be frowned upon. Probably, if it’s really offensive or inappropriate, it will be asked to be covered or removed. Great. But what about religion if someone finds it offensive? Or political view? Or - following the same logic - preferences about sports team, or colors, or food? It seems absurd, but here we are, talking about an image that has been deemed appropriate to go on television without warning for underage viewers, it was printed on a national magazine without need for parental approval, it doesn’t show skin, it doesn’t depicts nudity, it shows only two women, cheerfully licking an icecream.
More seriously, what about pets hair if someone is allergic?
What if someone finds you offensive?
I think we can all agree that we need to find a balance. The right to protest, the right to be yourself.
In the mix, somewhere, we should put decency, tolerance and inclusion. But not if this means taking away freedom from others.
If you are thinking "but what about the children"? The image presented to underaged players? Well, Rolling Stone magazine didn't ask for age verification, nor the telly. Also, If we choose to see a sexual reference in the image (malice and beauty are in the eye of the beholder) a child might not see the same thing. Sometimes, to innocent creatures, two girls eating an ice cream are just two girls eating an Italian delicacy.
A BIT OF HISTORY
Since the early days of magic, when the amazing Richard Garfield, PhD (Phelddagrif, anyone?) designed the very first cards, images were a pretty big deal for the game. Visual imagery was and - I know - still is, extremely important.
Since the early days, there were all kinds of pictures. Semi-naked warriors, killing machines, dark rituals.
I’d like to suggest just a few images. Official images.
Earthbind, Sangromancer, Deadly allure, Nirkana Revenant, Radha Heir to Keld (AND MANY MORE!)
I’m sure if you compare our playmat with any of these pictures, It doesn’t appear on the same level. But let’s continue.
To my knowledge there are 2 other playmats that has some problems. Official Art playmat, moreover. The first one is the GP Indianapolis, 2012. It depicted a Goblin Harem (half naked girls, intended to be seen as slaves of the goblin master. The Playmat, whose images were already made public, was taken back and never given to the players.
To quote Elaine Chase, at that time Magic’s Brand Manager: “That playmat is not authorized and will not be given out”.
Searching for more information I found this “Magic tries to avoid using women as purely sexual beings in art, and specifically tries to avoid images of women being taken advantage of..“
Again, comparing this to our, do you think it’s women being taken advantage? Do you think it’s on the same level? I honestly don’t.
The other playmat was the (sadly) famous “Chandra and Liliana” playmat. I’m not going in details here, but I’d like to add something that happened in Bologna.
On turn one. The player to my right was using that playmat.
At the end of round one, a judge asked me to not use our playmat anymore.
My teammates and I are (were) used to ask the opponent if he/she felt offended by the playmat before starting the match (in case of positive answer we would have used another one). None of us have encountered a single positive answer. All the players we faced, were happy to agree and “let” us use our playmat. My first opponent was the same. A friendly guy from Belgium, If I recall. When the judge asked me to remove the playmat, he was so kind to take my side. He told the judge I asked if I could use it, if he was ok with it. And reiterated that to him there were no problems. The judge said it was not a matter of him or any opponent.
I asked why the playmat was not OK and he told me it was considered offensive by CFB (his words). I told him that it was not a problem, but I would have preferred, since it’s an organizer thing, that a representative of CFB would have given me a written explanation - to have something I could read later on - and have for posterity (also, help my memory, but mainly posterity), to use as a reminder when making another playmat.
The judge said that I would have to go to one of the “red shirts” myself, and ask directly.
Even if I think it should not be me to go searching for the staff but viceversa (I was there to play a tournament, with limited time between rounds, stressful situation, I was the customer and I was asked to do something with little explanation..), still, I thought “ok I’ll use the other playmat for the time being and ask the organizers at end of day - or tournament, whichever would have come first - . What’s my point here? That the judge that came to tell me the bad news, saw the playmat used by my neighbour. Yes, the Liliana and Chandra playmat. And did nothing.
I felt - as I realized later on - targeted.
Was it possible that our playmat was worse than the one that had already so much negative publicity and online discussions? This was only the beginning.
I don’t know what happened the following round, but the main event, even if it started with a win, didn’t really start as I would have hoped.
MY TEAMMATES EXPERIENCE
This is where things get tricky. As I told you, the team is composed of 10 people. 9 of which where at the GP/MF using the playmat. If you ever went to a MF you know how things get chaotic. It’s not always possible to meet your friends between each round. So this part is a reconstruction of events.
S. was found first. A judge approached him and said “this is too much sexual content” and S., with his english, replied “I don’t think so”. And kept playing. The judge left.
This can look pretentious or arrogant, but please consider a few things: there was no explicit request from the judge at that time, there was no forewarning or inquiry to understand if the player spoke english or not, and the answer given by S. was an honest one. S. doesn’t think there is too much sexual content of the Playmat. Nor do I or the rest of the team. Let’s move on.
I was the second one, then A, then M and so on and so forth.
We felt like the “level of attention” toward us, was increased. We didn’t feel OK.
We felt like we were explicitly targeted. We had proof of this later on, when we were chatting with a judge - friend (yes, we love judges. We always have. Some of them we are proud to call friends. We have cards signed by them (we even hug from time to time, especially if they are wearing alien costumes).
We have dinner with them, even at their houses. They are friends.
We talk to them, we discuss, we protest. But mainly we ask things, doubts and unclear situations or rulings. In short: we rely on them. This time was no different. A judge asked one of us if he had been using “that” playmat. He answered that he didn’t remember, but It could have been early during the day. Weird question, wasn’t it? Well, as it turned out, a player, on turn three, went to the judge station, after losing to M., to protest. Why? Because he uses playmat. Wait a minute. He/she (looked like a he, so I’ll go with “he” from now on) didn’t asked M. to not use it. He didn’t call a judge to have M. stop using it. Instead he went to the judges AFTER losing the match.
Do you see the pattern here?
Let me be clear. What did he do? He tried to gain a win.
This is part of a bigger line of reasoning. If we allow people to protest for everything, the system crashed. And by system I mean the entire structure. Now, I don’t want to limit the right to protest, but I also want to protect the right for people to have a different opinion than the “protester”.
I have no way of knowing for a fact that he felt (is it the right verb? Or pretended?) offended by the playmat. BUT. Don’t you agree that his behaviour is not of someone who is really affected by it, but more or less the one of a person trying to deal damage for his own gain?
What if M. was still using the playmat the turn after? Would you say that the well being of the opponent was more important than the wellbeing (or concentration!) of M.?
But let’s move on.
(And yes, mr. M. did splendidly on day - thanks for asking).
Still, during the rest of the day, whenever we met and checked the scores with each other, we had new, unfortunate stories to tell regarding the playmat.
The worst one I believe is the following: side event, legacy. 20:30ish. Half the venue, empty. Side event taking place in the northern tables, far away from the main event. Something like 29 people “still” playing. The rest is empty seats. Lots of empty seats.
A judge had asked already (two times? Not sure how many) S. and A. to stop using the playmat. Without success. I might say without also explaining in italian, since S. and A. have a bit of a translation problem (remember? I warned you in the beginning!).
It’s the last turn of the event. Not a single person had protested (except that judge, as I have been told).
A. and S. are facing each other. At the last seat (yes, they were not really at their best of their game that day).
Teammate VS teammate. They both take out the playmat and start playing. They started laughing and playing as friends do. Cheerfully.
Mid game, the judge comes at the table. Accompanied by an ARMEG guard. Askes the two players to STOP immediately (even with a complicated board state, as they described it), and to remove the playmat OR THE TWO WOULD HAVE BEEN ESCORTED OUTSIDE BY THE ARMED GUARD.
I think this is outrageous. This is extreme. This is too much.
I think this is bullying. (If you read the definition “Bullying is the use of force, coercion, or threat, to abuse, aggressively dominate or intimidate…”). This was a clear threat and intimidation.
Whose person was there to protect? Who was being affected by the two people playing?
What incredible harm would have come to had A. and S. finish their game?
I’m not undermining the judge authority.
I am not excusing A and S for not following the “suggestions” earlier.
But I think this was over the line.
I think something along the day has been lost. And I think that’s called common sense.
If you see two people, playing the last match of the tournament, playing one against the other, with a full board, with no child innocence (if that’s what you were aiming for) to protect. With NO PROBLEM except the one you think there were.. You don’t threat. You don’t Bully.
Shame on you. You should have seen the faces, the emotions of A. and S. and the rest of the team. Shaken does not even begin to cover it.
But that’s my opinion. You can have yours. You can say that it was the only way to have them stop using the playmat. We are here (hopefully, are we still here?) to discuss. To learn. To improve.
Here I would like to offer some facts:
To the people saying that CFB is a private firm, and decides what you can use and what you cannot use, as playmat, in their tournaments, I would like to remind a few things.
First, I agree with the right to enforce a private company policy, but the way you enforce it (and the policy itself) are under the legislation of the country in which the tournament is taking place.
Moreover, I am all for inclusion, and defending the rights of “minority” as my friends in the LGBTQ community (no jokes this time on the letters, this is serious). But this has never been an excuse for limiting the rights of others.
To put it simply: if I say or do something that offends you, you have the right to say it’s offensive, to me or the organizers.
Then I can decide to do something about it or not, and the organizers/judge have the right to enforce their decision. BUT. If I am within my rights, legal rights, you have no power over my actions.
If you find my playmat offensive (and this open letter with the intent to understand if this is ok or not, and how to draw the line), you can ask me not to use it. But if you are in a tournament where the organizer says is OK, I have the right to use it and you should be a person of class and accept it.
Let’s dig a bit deeper. .I’m a computer engineer, startupper and I have studied a few courses in business management. I understand, from a business perspective, that the more inclusive the company/brand appears, the more appeal it has, the more customers it can keep, the more money make (and shareholders happy). I understand very well the implications of brand identity, brand reputation, customer feedback and brand perception. I also know the silent majority is a powerful metaphor for those who understand it. If I cannot play with this playmat, or other playmats, or the game continue to lose appeal because the “protecting” policies are making it lose its essence, if I don’t feel welcomed anymore, because the environment has become toxic for the customer persona with the higher share, the company loses money. Just to put some numbers out there (I love numbers!)
- 5 people doing the friday PTQ
- 4 doing (at least) one last chance
- 10 people on the main event
- 4 people doing the saturday
- 7 people doing the sunday MCQ
If we as a team decided to drop and ask for a refund, It would have been (just by this simple calc) around 1500 €. If we had to factor in all the friends that said were disgusted by this, I think it would have been a lot of missed earnings. But, this is not a threat, nor an excuse. I am just providing You with all the elements.
The organizer here decided to listen to the protest of a single person and forbid a playmat to 10 people. It didn’t ask for a “second opinion” and didn’t care for our point of view. I have no knowledge of any person from CFB to have actually seen the playmat before banning it. Even if, I am sure no one ever asked (not us, but a generic someone) if the judge who felt offended was on the correct side.
We are not talking about a hate message here. Or depicting women as slaves or objectifying women. We are talking about two actresses licking an ice cream (voluntarily), promoting a tv serie, with pink dots and a rainbow unicorn as logo. We are talking about personal judgement and enforcing a “protect all, at all costs” policy that is not healthy for the game.
I think we, as players, judge and organizers, should be extremely honest about this.
If something offends us, or make us feel unease, we should ask ourselves if what we are doing to make us feel better is making the other person feel worse.
-This part is shared with the members of the team-
That is exactly how we felt. We tried to create a playmat that was within the rules, that didn’t offend anyone (at least not on purpose!), that had meaning for us, and we were using it during the event we waited for so long to go to and live at fullest. We started playing and.. we were forced to stop using it. Some of us with very little explanation. Some with more. Some with grace, some by menacing the use of brute force. We could not believe it. We felt targeted.
We were targeted. We didn’t want to cause problems (and hopefully we didn’t) but neither to feel this bad.
Personally I don’t think the playmat is too much. I don’t think it’s demeaning or degrading.
I don’t think it promotes an unhealthy image of women, and I don’t think it contains too much sexual content.
I think it’s at most provocative, sensual.
If I have to learn a new word in english I’d say it’s mildly alluring.
I think it's a matter of taste here, a matter of personal opinion and deciding if it's good taste or not. Not a matter of representing a gender in a demeaning or disrespectful way.
All considered, I think it should be playable, in any tournament.
DON'T WANT TO READ THE WHOLE THING? JUST READ THE FOLLOWING!
PREMISE: During a GP some people used a playmat that a judge thought was too sexual. Playmat was banned.
GOALS OF THIS OPEN LETTER:
- discussing if the image that was used is perceived as too much by the majority or is just a matter of bad taste.
- since there are many other "similar" or “worse” images permitted, like many cards with half naked bodies, violence, slaves etc. (please refer to the cards imageries section for more) or "revealing" cosplayers or other “unappropriate but still permitted” situations on the same location: if the playmat should be considered worse or not
- discussing if the community feels the restricting trend as increased in recent years, if it's correct or dangerous in the long term
- learn other people perspective about why they feel uncomfortable, and possibly if it's personal or logical and objective to those claims.
Thank You all,
Hope to play some Magic with you, someday.
