hey all you romantics here. where would be a nice place to take a girl out in Wroclaw? it could be active date, like bowling or such, but because its a bit chilly, a walk in the park should wait until the spring. any cool performances or concerts taking place this weekend? maybe somebody has a cool idea? dziekuje!

3 Month Europe/Morocco Trip Itinerary

Some background: I'm a Canadian who just graduated university and have a gap year before starting grad school and I'm looking to travel, fairly typical. I'm crossing my fingers for a mid September-Early October departure date. I haven't been outside of NA very much. The past few weeks I spent researching a giant 110ish day trip through a good chunk of Europe and Morocco. I tried making it as logistically sound as possible, but more sets of eyes could certainly help.
For each city, I plan to leave early in the morning and to arrive in the afternoon (although I understand stuff happens and my plan will certainly get altered).
I'm trying to leave enough time per city to not only hit the major highlights but get a small glimpse at city life and culture. Another thing I tried to keep in mind is burn-out, but I'm finding it hard to estimate how that will factor in.
I'm looking for any advice or pointers (since I'm completely new to this). Included are my estimated living and transport costs. I'm trying to make it as cheap as possible and these numbers are pretty rough of course. Train is my primary mode of transport, but am open to buses to keep things cheap. I'm not picky about that stuff.
London (5 days) -> 400 Euros (80 euros/day) + transport to Paris 55 euros (Eurostar)
Paris (5 days) -> 350 Euros (70 euros/day) + Transport to Bruges 35 euros
Bruges, Belgium (3 days) -> 180 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Amsterdam 50 euros
Amsterdam (3 days) -> 200 Euros (67 euros/day) + Transport to Berlin 40 euros
Berlin (4 days) -> 240 euros (60 euros/day) + Transport to Wroclaw (35 euros)
Wroclaw (3 days) -> 100 euros (33 euros/day) + transport to Krakow 20 euros
Krakow (4 days) -> 140 euros (35 euros/day) + transport to Olomou 22 Euros
Olomouc (2 days) -> 80 euros (40 euros/day) + Transport to Prague 22 euros
Prague (5 days) -> 225 euros (45 euros/day) + Transport to Nuremberg 15 Euros
Nuremberg (2 days) -> 110 euros (55 euros/day) + transport to Munich 20 euros
Munich (3 days) -> 180 euros (60 euros/day) + Transport to Salzberg 20 euros
Salzberg (2 days) -> 110 euros (55 euros/day) + Transport to Vienna 35 euros
Vienna (3 days) -> 165 euros (55 euros/day) + transport to Budapest 30 euros
Budapest (4 days) -> 120 euros (30 euros/day) + transport to Ljubljana 20 euros
Ljubljana (4 days) -> 200 euros (50 euros/day) + Bled Transport (20 euros) + Transport to Venice for 22 euros
Venice (3 days) -> 225 euros (75 euros/day) + transport to Rome 40 euros
Rome (5 days) -> 300 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Florence 30 euros
Florence (3 days) -> 225 euros (75 euros/day) + transport to Cinque Terre 40 euros
Cinque Terre (2 days) -> 150 euros (75 euros/day) + transport to nice 30 euros
Nice + Monaco (3 days) -> 180 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Avignon 38 euros
Avignon, France (2 days) -> 120 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Carcassonne 33 euros
Carcassonne (2 days) -> 120 euros (60 euros/day) + 40 euros for transport to Barcelona
Barcelona (4 days) -> 260 euros (65 euros/day) + transport to Valencia 30 euros
Valencia (2 days) -> 140 euros (70 euros/day) + transport to Madrid 30 euros
Madrid (5 days) -> 200 euros (40 euros/day) + transport to Granada 30 euros
Granada (3 days) -> 180 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Malaga 30 euros
Malaga (2 days) -> 120 euros (60 euros/day) + transport to Marrakesh (40 euros)
Marrakesh (3 days) – 90 euros (30 euros/day) + Sahara desert tour to Fes (300 euros)
Sahara Desert Tour (3 days) – 40 euros (food + emergencies)
Fes (3 days) -> 90 euros (30 euros/day) + transport to Chefchaouen for 20 euros
Chefchaouen (2 days) -> 60 euros (30 euros/day) + transport to Tangier (9 euros)
Tangier (1 day) -> 30 euros + flight to Seville (70 euros)
Seville (3 days) -> 150 euros (50 euros/day) + Flight to Porto (40 euros)
Porto (3 days) - > 120 euros (40 euros/day) + Bus to Lisbon for 25 euros
Lisbon (4 days) -> 160 euros (40 euros/day) flight home for $600
Total Days: 110
Total Estimated Cost (Euros): Approximately 7000 (+ another 500 emergency fund)
**excluding flights into London and out of Lisbon/wherever is cheapest at the time**
It's a long one but I feel like this would be one epic trip. Let me know if you have any suggestions or pointers for a first time backpacker. Also if any of my estimations seem off (ex.

[04/14 - 5/12] USA -> Krakow, Wroclaw, Prague, Berlin, maybe north to Stockholm until end date

I'm a 25 year old from Georgia, just looking to explore before I start the second half of my adult life.
Pretty down to earth and I drink but I'm not outrageous haha
If anyone wants to meet up from place and travel to my next destination, that would be great as well. Kind of nervous about the first time I'll be by myself in another country for that long.

Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria ( + Others in the region)

Hey guys, looking for some advice on either of the 3 countries above, I understand because of all the uncertainty, any conventional wisdom from experience is somewhat out the window but still, any help would be greatly appreciated!!
I'm a UK citizen, just graduated from uni with a degree in Accountancy with Finance & currently doing an Online TEFL, with The TEFL Academy. I've got a grad job starting in September 2021, so I would only be teaching for ~12 months at the most.
My original plan was to go to Vietnam, however, given the current situation, getting outside of Europe looks unlikely, so I've started looking into taking a Celta course.
I have found 3 courses in August that are still planning on delivering full time, in-person. They're in Wroclaw, Kiev & Sofia. They all finish at the end of August, then I would look for jobs once it was finished, so given I'm not going to be looking until late August/September, any advice on how that would impact job prospects?
I'm tending towards Wroclaw, but wanted to get some advice on pay (relative to COL) & working conditions in these cities (or other cities in these countries or neighbouring countries which would be good alternatives) for 1st time teachers & if anyone who's currently there is aware of how much impact Covid has had on the markets there, so far?
My only relevant experience is 3 weeks volunteering at English Language "immersion" summer camps in Poland, with AngloVille, which are focused on conversational English and games & activities, with teenagers, opposed to actual direct teaching.
I'm not looking to save money while I'm away. I'd like to break even but I've got a good amount of savings, so would be willing to make a loss on the year if necessary, but wouldn't want it exceeding £1,000 & I'm happy sharing an apartment with around 2 or 3 other people, as I would prefer to live with a few people & also since it helps to keep the costs down
P. S. I've looked at the Poland wiki on here & it says most hiring tends to be done in May/June for September start dates, but has that hiring window been pushed back because of covid uncertainty?

Couple new informations from Thursdays QnA with investors

I was looking for a source for the VGC's article about expansions but I didn't find anything about it on CDPR's site.
But I found another, different QnA from Thursday in english so I listened to it, hoping I will hear it there. Nope, nothing about it. But...

Covid19 and flights

I've seen lots of conflicting information about this, so apologies for raising this if I've missed something.
I've got a flight booked with Wizzair from Scotland to Warsaw on 22 May, and then a return flight to Scotland from Wroclaw on 30 May with Ryanair.
I used my credit card to pay for them; Both transactions were approx. £85-£90 each.
I haven't heard anything from wizzair about the flight - as it stands they're assuming it will run as normal.
I received an email from Ryanair advising me to move my flight to a later date before 31 August and pay the difference in fare. They're trying to be the good guys by graciously waiving the date change fee... They've also refrained from specifically saying the flights been cancelled. Just not to rebook for May.
I booked this for a specific occassion, so rebooking for a later date is no good.
No luck getting through chats or calls (btw, Did you know the Wizzair website states they charge you £1.45 per minute, and add an additional €15 if tou could have self served!).
My question is where I stand with requesting a refund. Can I do this through my bank as I used a CC?
If I haven't provided enough info, happy to do that. I'm just u sure where I stand. I know it's not a massive amount of money, but I rather use it on something I like rather than it just disappearing!

Need a favour in Wroclaw's Biblioteka Kapitulna

Hello there, fellows, and cheers from Spain! I would need someone to look at a manuscript in the Biblioteka Kapitulna, in Wroclaw, and take pictures of some of the pages. The manuscript in question contains the first translation into German of the Spanish novel "Lazarillo de Tormes", and is dated in 1614. The German title of this translation is "Leben und wandel Lazaril von Tormes". Thank you very much in advance, and have a happy new year

Getting to know a little bit about you guys...

Hi guys!
My friend and I (both 20y/o males) are visiting Wroclaw this december in order to attend the Taizé event that they're hosting. I just have a couple of questions about your culture, since we are both Spanishs with some Latins roots and we have known a couple of Eastern europeans and well, you are (not to be rude) quite "cold" for us 😅
First of all, how to approach girls? You don't do the two kiss salute, right? What about males? My best friend is Georgian and he salutes the closest friends in his countries by giving 2 kisses as well, kinda weird for me tbh. Following up, does the nightclubs, especially in Wroclaw, are, what you can call, "normal"? Or at least normal in the Western culture? (reggaeton, latin, pop and some electronic music) Or do you guys do not listen to that music at all? (reggaeton, etc like) Moreover, I know its an stereotype, do you drink mostly vodka? Or its just the cheapest drink in town? And what about the New Year's Eve mood, since the event takes place in about those date, what do people usually do? They just stay at home or do you go to nightclubs, bars too?
Perhaps the most important question: do you, in average, speak English, you dont like it, we should establish at first in Polish that we do not speak your language? Bc our Ukranians friends really appreciates us knowing some Ukranian phrases, or even Russians ones. To end with: the city cost are cheaper than the average of Western city or are similar?
Thank y'all and sorry for both all the stereotypes and the long paragraphs, but we just want to know you a little bit in advance before screwing it up!! 😅
EDIT: Pd: Im a vegetarian, will I have any troubles finding something to eat or smt like that?

Zero pounds banknotes

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/patriicia/zero-pounds-banknotes
Touted as part Brexit souvenir and part performance art while screaming "Scam!" this project offers up mock banknotes for £5 each, three for £10, ten for £25, or £200 for thirty featuring your own image or one hundred of those for £350 - with a target of just £11,000. This is likely inspired by the recent reporting of the popularity of Anti-Brexit notes: https://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2019/aug/09/fake-anti-brexit-banknotes-added-to-british-museum-collection
The project displays twelve high-end printing techniques which this note will enjoy, but none of the graphic samples are from the note to be produced. If that's not enticing enough the banknote will be "Designed and made in a real mint that prints real banknotes! ", plus "will be designed by the artist from the mint " by which I guess she means the Royal Mint. The Royal Mint, like most mints, manufactures coins and medals. All British banknotes are printed by De La Rue plc, they're the only company in the UK who can offer this type of high end printing.
The offered delivery date is October 2019 for the regular notes or November 2019 for the custom ones. With this project finishing on the 20th of September the funds won't reach Ms. Ngozi's account until around the 2nd Oct, giving her just 29 and 59 days respectively to set up these complex printing processes, source the highly technical paper stock, have them printed and ship them. Unlikely to say the least
The creator Patricia Ngozi claims both:
A Bachelor of Arts in Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology from the University of Wroclaw in Poland, but a search for that very course produces no page results - https://uni.wroc.pl/en/?s=Bachelor+of+Arts%3A+Ethnology+and+Cultural+Anthropology+
And she doesn't show on an alumni list: https://graduates.name/university_of_wroclaw-6011#alumni
A Bachelor of Science: Cosmetology and Dietetic - Aesthetic Cosmetology and SPA at the University of Social Sciences in Warsaw, Poland. A search throws up plenty of results but none which I could see suggesting a course of that name nor type: http://en.san.edu.pl/szukaj?string=Bachelor+of+Science%3A+Cosmetology+and+Dietetic+-+Aesthetic+Cosmetology+and+SPA
...and a search engine search shows no course of that name globally.
Despite being one incredibly well qualified Nigerian she then finds herself work as an "Online Seller" for Ugogbe , the only Ugogbe which shows up on a search is " Ugogbe - Health and wellness is our passion" which links to a Wordpress theme page with no content.

Any updates on the "Nysa" conspiracy?

I was victim to the banggood "Stuck in Nysa" scam. To sum up what happened so far:
Placed order in 21st of June.
Few and misguiding Updates till late July (Package transferred from EU Frankfurt (Destiny Germany) back to Hongkong. After arriving in Hong Kong the tracking info stalls until Jul, 21 where it was "in transfer Nysa".
Banggood changes shipping my and other custumers date without warning to the 26th of July to avoid 60 day refunds.
Opened Paypal Claim.
On the last day (21 days from there) Banggood responded as seller to ebay, posting nothing but the tracking link).
After 60 days they refused to refund (that was beforer the PayPal claim was under review).
After responding to the claim scamgood gave up and refundet on "their own", closing the paypal claim.
So I got my money back.
Now there was another update on the tracking info "in Transit (Wroclaw)" which is approx. 2 hrs by car away from Nysa. That was 30 days ago. I contacted Royal Shipments and they did not respond to my mail but to my 4th one, stating that i should wait 10 days (thats 20 ago today) and then contact "the seller". So not helpful at all.
Has anyone got his packages in the EU after beeing Stuck in Nysa for some weeks now?
Just out of curiosity if there is still a spark of hope left to get a "free" (not counting the free credit for 90 days, the disappointment and stress debating with unhelpful but friendly customer support, that just responds to wait longer without reading or answering your explicit questions) phone :)
What is your experience?

Clan-based Nomadic Survival MMO Last Oasis announced

WROCLAW, POLAND - JANUARY 23, 2019 - Independent developers, Donkey Crew, announced today that their post-apocalyptic clan-based Nomadic Survival MMO, Last Oasis, will be entering Early Access this Spring.
Watch the Last Oasis trailer, here: https://youtu.be/5GNUc_fMGaM
Thousands of years in the future, after a cataclysmic event has halted the Earth’s rotation and destroyed the moon, the planet is now split into two extreme and inhospitable environments. The side that faces the sun is an arid wasteland and the other has been thrown into eternal ice and darkness. The only habitable area is the Twilight zone; a small strip of land between desert and ice, moving slowly around the Earth as the planet rotates around the sun. A day now lasts a year and in order to survive, the remnants of humanity have built a large walking city, Flotilla. Outside of the city, warring clans fight tooth and nail in a battle of survival as they clash over resources, territory and alliances in this unforgiving new world. Every day, Flotilla sends both willing and unwilling nomads into the passing Oases to gather necessary resources to keep the city walking. Not many return alive.
In Last Oasis, players take on the role of the unwilling chosen nomads from Flotilla. They must gather resources and build Walkers; large woodpunk inspired ship-like machines required for world travelling, combat, base building and harvesting. Walkers are upgradable and can be equipped with different attachments for these various purposes. At the highest level, clan warfare incorporates multiple walkers and players manning them on both sides. Large amounts of resources will be destroyed during clan wars, so players must think carefully about what and when to attack. Over time, clans will form alliances and hostilities. There will be times of peace, times of global war and constant player development.
“In Last Oasis, Clan Warfare fuels the economy, the economy encourages traders, traders encourage piracy, pirates encourage mercenaries...” said Florian Hofreither, Project Lead. “Everything is designed to be interconnected, players affect other players with their actions, often without even knowing it. This leads to a meaningful, evolving world and real player-driven stories.”
Last Oasis will be launching into Early Access in Spring 2019. Its release date will be announced in the coming weeks. Players can head to the Steam page for a full list of features and all the latest updates from the development team and they can add Last Oasis to their wish lists. They can also join in the conversation on Twitter and Discord.

[Unexplained Death] Who was "Marysia Sierotka"? Old mystery from Poland

Doe cases in Polish media are rare, especially old ones, so I think this one is worth sharing with you all. This write up is basically translation of Jacek Harłukowicz's 2013 article from „Gazeta Wyborcza” newspaper: here is the original – paywalled and here you can find copy-paste.
It's the first time I'm translating one proper article instead of compiling new English text from many sources, so please forgive me any language mistakes.
~~~
On her grave there's only date of death. Her death was investigated in 70s by Milicja Obywatelska [Citizens' Militia, equivalent of police in socialist Poland – DVDM.]. Unsuccessfully. Who was she?
It's not hard to find her. Section number 123N/745, main alley of Cmentarz Osobowicki [Osobowice Cementary, Wrocław, Lower Silesia, Poland – DVDM]. Within easy reach – graves not longer than one meter [3 ft – DVDM]. There are only diminutive names on the tombstones: Agatka, Piotruś, Madzia [diminutive forms of names: Agata, Piotr, Magdalena – DVDM].
Some graves are forgotten. I've noticed the one of hers 10 years ago, when by chance I went to that area of the cementary. It was collapsing. There was no slab on its liner. On the tombstone made of terrazzo – they don't make them like this these days, a simple mixture of water, cement and plaster – faded lettering: In Holy Memory of „Marysia Sierotka” [Maria the Little Orphan – DVDM], died April, 6 1976. Plus typical in this part of cementary: „She enlarged the circle of angels” [phrase often used on children's graves in Poland – DVDM].
There was some flowers and burned out grave candle.
I've found this grave again in 2010. Again by chance. I've recognized it only by the gravestone, because grave itself looked totally different – golden granite, visible lettering. And new inscription: „Sleep, little angel”. On the grave – plaster figurine. It was contrasting with graves nearby, where many of them are mounds with a plate and a cross. Often the rotten one. Only this inscription was bothering me: „Marysia Sierotka”. Is it a real name? Why there is only date of death? What about date of birth?
Few months later I've found Marysia's story on the one of blogs. According to the urban legend shared there girl was living in non-existent children's home on Lekcyjna Street.
„She came to the home in postwar Wrocław. She couldn't tell her name, age, whose she is. Only obvious thing was – that's how it was seen by those who met her and took care of her – the fact she was the most beloved, the most wonderful child in the world. This kind of child who will get even love of children's home staff. Nobody remembers why she died. She couldn't be more than six or seven. But I'm sure her death brought true sadness, despair and tears of caretakers.”
Bolesław's find
In march of 2013 I've contacted the management of the children's home. Institution was then runned by Stowarzyszenie „Nasz Dom” [„Our Home” Association – DVDM] (now it's Wrocławskie Centrum Opieki i Wychowania [Care and Education Center of Wrocław – DVDM]). I was looking for the documents that would lead me to the girl's trail. Principal Hanna Jednaszewska checked out archives. It turned out that „Marysia Sierotka” was never here.
In Zarząd Cmentarzy Komunalnych [Board of Municipal Cementeries – DVDM] there was an uphill battle, too. In the middle of 2013 principal Zofia Kluszycka hadn't really wanted to talk about the grave. Anyway she claimed that she doesn't know much about it. Yes, there is a grave like this. It was renovated 3 years earlier and private person who founded gravestone, doesn't want to reveal his/her name.
However, with time distrust of the principal has passed. Together we established that Marysia wasn't girl's name. She was named after her death. And indeed, she wasn't living in children's home on Lekcyjna Street. Or in any other. In her birth certificate – that is death certificate at the same time – there's no name or surname, date and place of birth.
In sections, where these informations are usually entered, then „deputy menager of Urząd Stanu Cywilnego [Registry Office – DVDM] Teresa Bęben” typed: „On April 6, 1976 on city dump on Bardzka Street in Wrocław there was found by citizen [blackened], living in Wrocław on [blackened] Street, dead female fetus of so far unidentified mother. The childbirth occured on April 5, 1976. Fetus was born dead, weighs 1 kilogram [2,20 lb – DVDM], is 36 centimeters [14 inches – DVDM] long. From research done in this area and external examination of the fetus it appears that fetus is at about six months gestation.” [original spelling]
There is also annonation that „certificate was based on document of headquaters of Milicja Obywatelska in Wrocław from April 12, 1976”. Plus signature of case.
In today Komenda Wojewódzka Policji [Provincial Police Headquaters – DVDM] in Wrocław I haven't found any trace of that investigation. Nearly 40 years passed. The case was not about murder, more about abadonment. Files probably are catching dust, forgotten, in the archives or were destroyed.
But we can determine information about the man who on April 6, 1976, found Marysia's little body on Bardzka Street. I don't know much about him. His name was Bolesław Tomczyk, he was then 48 years old. He died on May, 30 1996. He was buried on Cmentarz Grabiszyński [Grabiszyn Cementary – DVDM]. His burial took place on Children's Day [June, 1 in Poland – DVDM].
There are no witnesses
„City dump on Bardzka Street” from 1976 now is Wzgórze Gajowe [Gaj Hill – DVDM]. Residents of blocks of flats situated nearby call it „Wysyp”. Before World War II German fertilizer factory Silesia was working here and after Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933, one of the first concentration camps for fuhrer's political opponents – KZ Durrgoy – was organized here.
After the war rubble from destroyed Breslau buildings was transported here, as well as municipal waste. Here in 1958 Andrzej Wajda shot the last scene of „Popiół i diament” [„Ashes and Diamonds” - DVDM]. That one when Maciek Chełmicki, played by Zbigniew Cybulski, dies on a pile of rubbish.
When in April 1976 Bolesław Tomczyk appeared on the dump, there was no trace of the movie nor blocks of flats. The blocks will be built three years later. That's why when I was going round the neighbourhood and trying to ask residents about this story, nobody could say anything.
-They'd started building first plattenbau blocks here in 1979, so you rather won't find here anyone who remembers this kind of things – muses older man, whose I'm bugging on Srebrnogórska Street. Anyway he had never heard about any Marysia, especially the Little Orphan. Except this one from Konopnicka. [Maria Konopnicka's fairy tale „Little Orphan Mary and the Gromes”, popular in Poland – DVDM].
Hill itself still is rather scarying than encouraging for walks. Yes, there were great plans – including building indoor ski slope, similar to this in „Mall of Emirates” in Dubai, but it ended on the plans. Last year somebody submitted the project – to create here within the Wrocławski Budżet Obywatelski [Citizens Budget of Wrocław – DVDM] recreation space with bike paths, but the project lost the vote. It got 294 votes.
Nice tombstone in stock
10 years after I've found Marysia for the first time and 5 years after somebody put up a proper gravestone for her, I reached a man who decided that Little Orphan can't lie in the crumbling grave.
Andrzej Płocki passes her grave from nearly 40 years. His brother is buried nearby. Five years ago he decided he can't look anymore on the decaying grave. He didn't know her story. He took legend circulating online for the truth. He is stonecutter, he works in graves from 42 years. He runs the plant in the neighbourhood of Cmentarz Osobowicki. It's family business. In addition to him and his wife, his two daughers and son-in-law are working here.
-For many years, like many people, we were lighing the candles, wife was bringing fresh flowers. There is something in this inscription „Marysia Sierotka” that doesn't allow a man to pass by – he says calmly, when we're already standing over her grave. He rearranges flowers, sweeps up fallen leaves from the gravestone.
-When our grandchildren were born, we have started to look differently at children and the tragedies of parents who are losing them. When parent come to order a gravestone for his child, I'm crying with him – adds Jolanta Płocka.
-And with Marysia it was an impulse. It was before All Saints' Day. We just had a nice children's tombstone in stock. I've asked my husband: maybe we'll put it up for Little Orphan?
They replaced old terrazzo with Indian granite. Market value – at least several thousand zlotys. They didn't take a penny. Because from whom?
Cementary menagement, which must each time give official permission to replace the gravestone, approached the replacement kindly. They even didn't demand fees, customary on such occassions. For example for entering the cementary area by car. Because the tombstone had to be delivered somehow.
Now Marysia Sierotka lies in one of the prettiest sections on her area. The plaster angel, that Jolanta Płocka bought on Allegro [Polish auction site, similar to eBay – DVDM], stands undisturbed from 5 years. Although there is a lot of thefts on the cementary. Angel has a rosary in its hands. It's the only thing that remained from the old grave. An elderly woman who stops at the Marysia's grave at first eyeballs me, but later, pointing the rosary, says: And only it remained after the child.
She rearranges the daisies that I brought a moment earlier.
World Cup Best Young Player - A history of the winners and their careers
Eredivisie version here
PL version here
1958: Pele (Brazil)
Pele won this award at only 17 years of age, becoming the youngest player in history to achieve this distinction. He went on to score over 1000 goals for Santos and New York Cosmos, won 3 World Cups, and is debatably the GOAT.
Fun fact: Pele was named after the American inventor Thomas Edison (his real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento).
Notable awards:
1962: Florian Albert (Hungary)
Albert was a one club man for Hungarian club Ferencvaros, and remained actively involved in various roles with them after his retirement. He won the Ballon D'or in 1967.
Fun fact: Albert had a stadium named after him, the Stadion Albert Florian.
Notable awards:
1966: Franz Beckenbauer (Germany)
Widely considered to be the best defender of all time, Beckenbauer made a name for himself as the captain of both Bayern and the German national team before moving to New York Cosmos, Hamburg, and back to New York Cosmos. He currently works as a pundit for Sky Germany and is a columnist for the tabloid Bild.
Fun fact: After appearing in an ad for a big mobile phone company, Beckenbauer specifically requested the number 0176 / 666666 for his mobile phone. However, he soon was flooded with phone calls by men who thought it was a phone sex number (in German, "6" translates to "sechs", sounding similar to the word sex).
Notable awards:
1970: Teofilo Cubillas (Peru)
The Peruvian legend played for Alianza Lima, Basel, Porto, and Fort Lauerdale before joining a bunch of different American teams to finish his career. He was known for his technique and free kick ability.
Fun fact: Cubillas is one of only three players to score five or more goals in two different World Cups, the other two being Miroslav Klose and Thomas Müller.
Notable awards:
1974: Wladyslaw Zmuda (Poland)
Zmuda played for various Polish teams (most notably Slask Wroclaw) before joining Hellas Verona. After two injury-plagued seasons, he transferred to New York Cosmos and finally Cremonese, where he finished his career.
Fun fact: Zmuda has managed Poland at various youth levels ranging from U16 to U20.
1978: Antonio Cabrini (Italy)
Considered to be one of the best left backs of his generation, Cabrini played in Italy for his whole career. He started off at Cremonese before moving to Atalanta, Juventus, and Bologna. He went into management after he retired, having most recently coached the Italy women's team.
Fun fact: Cabrini was nicknamed Bell'Antonio ("beautiful Antonio"), because of his popularity as a fascinating and good-looking football player.
Notable awards:
1982: Manuel Amoros (France)
Amoros also stayed in his country of birth for his whole career, playing right back for Monaco, Marseille and Lyon. He was the French player of the year in 1986.
Fun fact: It turns out that Zidane was not the only Frenchman to headbutt somebody else during a match, as Amoros was sent off in the opening match of the 1984 European Championships for headbutting Danish midfielder Jesper Olsen.
Notable awards:
1986: Enzo Scifo (Belgium)
Scifo was a highly rated prospect in his youth, having made his first team debut for Anderlecht at the age of 17. He then transferred to Inter, where he flopped and joined Bordeaux, where he flopped again. He revived his career at Auxerre, which prompted him to return to Italy with Torino. He then transferred to Monaco before returning to Belgium to play for Anderlecht and Charleroi.
Fun fact: He proved himself a highly promising talent in youth football and was nicknamed "Little Pelé" at his local team, where he scored 432 goals in only four seasons as a junior.
Notable awards:
1990: Robert Prosinecki (Yugoslavia)
After successful spells at Dinamo Zagreb and Red Star Belgrade, Prosinecki moved to Real Madrid for 3 years before transferring to Oviedo, Barcelona, and Sevilla. He returned to Croatia to play for Zagreb and Hrvatski Dragovoljac before going back abroad to join Standard Liege, Portsmouth, and Olimpija. He then returned to Zagreb for a season before retiring at non-league Savski Marof, which is based in a settlement with 35 inhabitants. He then went into management and currently coaches the Bosnia national team.
Fun fact: He is the only player to score in the World Cup for two different teams: Yugoslavia and Croatia.
Notable awards:
1994: Marc Overmars (Netherlands)
The speedy winger played for Go Ahead Eagles and Willem before breaking out at Ajax. He then found success at Arsenal and Barcelona before retiring in 2004 due to knee problems. He came back in 2008 to play for Go Ahead Eagles again, but scored zero goals in his one season there.
Fun fact: Overmars grew up on a family farm with his parents and assisted his grandfather with the potato harvest each year. There were no machines or tractors, so when the time came to extract the potatoes, his family tied a rope around Overmars' waist, connected it to a cart and made him run while they pulled the crop out.
Notable awards:
1998: Michael Owen (England)
The English striker found stardom at Liverpool (he won the Ballon D'or there) before moving to Real Madrid. He didn't play as well with them and joined Newcastle for a then club record fee. His time with the Magpies was marred by injury (although he didn't play bad when fit) and ended with their relegation in 2009, so he transferred to Manchester United before retiring at Stoke.
Fun fact: Owen has provided us with a couple of gems during his time as a commentator:
“That would’ve been a goal had it gone inside the post.”
“It’s hit the facial part of his head, there.”
“That shot is impossible. I saw Yaya Toure do it once.”
Notable awards:
2002: Landon Donovan (USA)
Arguably America's best player ever (although Pulisic could change that soon), Donovan started off his career at Bayer but spent most of his time with them on loan at the San Jose Earthquakes. He transferred to LA Galaxy in 2005 and had brief spells at Bayern and Everton during his time there. He retired in 2014, but came back to play for the Galaxy before retiring again and joining Mexican club Leon for this past season.
Fun fact: The Major League Soccer MVP Award has been renamed the Landon Donovan MVP Award in his honor.
Notable awards:
2006: Lukas Podolski (Germany)
Podolski came up through the ranks at Koln, and moved to Bayern for a fee reported to be €10 million. He fell out of favor there due to the arrival of Luca Toni and returned to Koln. He then moved to Arsenal where he gained recognition in the Prem as a good finisher and went on loan to Inter for a season, before moving to Galatasaray and then Vissel Kobe, where he is currently the captain.
Fun fact: Podolski owns an ice cream parlour and a kebab shop in Cologne.
Notable awards:
2010: Thomas Muller (Germany)
To date, Muller has been a one club man for Bayern Munich and is currently their vice captain behind Manuel Neuer. He was the most capped player in Germany's squad for the 2018 World Cup, with 94 appearances and 38 goals.
Fun fact: In June 2011, he became an ambassador for YoungWings, a charity that helps children who have suffered bereavement or trauma.
Notable awards:
2014: Paul Pogba (France)
After leaving Manchester United in 2012, Pogba established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world at Juventus and returned to United for a then world record fee.
Fun fact: He has two older twin brothers – Florentin and Mathias – born in Guinea, who are also footballers and play for the Guinean national team.
Notable awards:
2018: Kylian Mbappe (France)
Mbappe looks poised to take the throne as the world's best player in the coming years, having broken out at Monaco as a 17 year old before moving to PSG last season for a staggering fee of €180 million.
Fun fact: His trademark goal celebration – posing with his arms crossed and hands tucked under his armpits – was inspired by his younger brother Ethan who would celebrate in this manner when beating Kylian at FIFA.
Notable awards:
I booked and planed a 14 day solo travel trip to Poland in two days - I leave tomorrow
Hey! I just wanted to write this all out because the last two days were insane. I lost my job back in July and luckily found a new one recently. They told me the start date wouldn't be until the 24th so yesterday I casually googled cheap flights to Europe (I'm in NA) then realized I could get to Poland pretty easily...
I sat there laughing for a couple minutes at the thought of leaving in two days then it started to sink in that I could actually do this. This year I also spent two weeks in Ukraine and another two camping around the states but once I start working, when am I going to get another two weeks off? I said fuck it.
So I'm spending a couple of days in Warsaw, 4 in Wroclaw, 4 or 5 in Krakow (Maybe a day trip to Zakopane) then train back to Warsaw to go home.
If anyone happens to read this that's in Poland the next two weeks we should grab a beer! If not, just know that if you're thinking of going somewhere, just go, you never know what you'll see.
