Hunting in California 101: How to Get Started (a Non-Definitive Guide)

Hunting in California 101: What I Wish I Knew When I Started

I swear it's really not as bad as people make it out to be.

Preface:

So you're probably reading this because you're interested in hunting in California and/or you're a new hunter who is struggling to do more than take a long walk in the woods with your weapon of choice. That or you just want to find all my mistakes and point them out. Great! This is written for you (even the pedants).
Since someone will ask, no I do not work for Fish and Wildlife. No I am not some professional guide or outfitter. I've just spent a lot of time hunting here as well as other states. I'm a transplanted software engineer on the Losing Side of Twenty-Five who fell victim to the sun and salary trap of San Diego and now I'm stuck. I've posted quite a bit on this subreddit before on a different Reddit account and even met with people from here. Then I lost the password to that account and I guess I never set up a recovery email. I'm bad with computers. Thank God I can fool my employer.

Part 0: How do I actually get started hunting in California?

  • Step 1: The first step is to complete your Hunter Education Safety Course. If you haven't done this yet you need to do this first. There is no circumventing this. Stop asking. This is the first step and probably 10% of the posts on the sub ask this. At the time of this writing, due to COVID-19, you can do the course entirely online. The course is worth paying attention to. There are a lot of California-specific rules and regulations that are important. I'm not going to go into specifics on how to do the course. If you can't figure it out, please don't start hunting. On the subject of hunter's education, unlike some states such as NY, California does not have a separate archery license and does not require you to complete a Bowhunter's Education Course to receive archery tags. It's still a good idea to do the course as it contains some great knowledge as well as opens up the opportunity to archery hunt in other states.
  • Step 2: Purchase your hunting license. The cost of a license is $51.02 as of 7/23/2020. You should receive a GO ID number during the process of acquiring your Hunter Safety Card above. This GO ID number is used by Fish and Wildlife to track you. It will be linked to some kind of ID which is also used to track you. In my case, this is my California driver's license. If I go to a license retailer, I can get a license or tag showing my driver's license. You don't need to memorize the GO ID number or anything; however, it is printed on your license documents so it's easy to find (once you have those, of course). If you have a fishing license you already have a GO ID. You can either order your license online straight from CDFW, from a CDFW License Sales Office, or from a licensed agent (the search function here is poorly set up--ignore the name and put in your ZIP or do County and State). Also, remember, your license is valid 7/1 to 6/30. NOT 1/1 to 12/31 like a fishing license.
    • Does it matter where I buy my license? The answer here for most people is no. If you are a disabled veteran with 50% or greater service-connected disability you need to purchase your license at the CDFW office the first time and bring your VA letter showing your rating and that it's service connected with you. After that you can buy it online or at the retailer of your choice. Disabled veteran licenses are currently $7.73. You may not need to go into a CDFW office due to COVID-19 right now. You should call and ask. Do not take this as gospel. There is also the Recovering Service Member Hunting License which requires a bunch of verification. I won't go into detail since I believe CDFW sold something like 3 of these in all of 2019. If you are mobility impaired, visually disabled, or qualify for the disabled archery permit (allowing you to use a crossbow during archery season), you're required to get your permit as well from a CDFW office as well as provide documentation from a licensed physician. There is no fee for any of those three licenses.

Part 1: What do I really need for hunting?

  • A hunting license. No seriously. This is a hard and fast requirement for California. If you want to hunt without a license go to Nevada and shoot coyotes (but don't actually do that--just get your damn license).
  • The appropriate tags. We'll go over this in the next section.
  • Patience. Temper your expectations. You are going to fail a lot at first. Hunting in California isn't easy and hunting on public land especially so. YouTube and hunting shows make it appear a lot easier than it is thanks to editing. Much like I tell the women I meet: have low expectations. This cannot be stressed enough.
  • Lead Free Ammo. More on this in a bit. Just remember this is a statewide requirement. Also someone asked me once if this applies to broad-heads for archery. Just lol. Don't be that guy.
  • General/Basic/Useful Starting Gear (this list is not exhaustive--just some ideas to get started):
    • Inexpensive pump-action 12 or 20 Gauge shotgun. If you're a new shooter, new to guns and can only afford one to start with this is the way to go. It opens up trap/skeet shooting as a hobby and will allow you to hunt small game, upland birds and waterfowl. A 12 gauge shotgun is sort of the American standard and a worthy first purchase; however, if you're a smaller framed person I would recommend a 20 gauge shotgun. I own both and use the 20 gauge more often than the 12 just because it's lighter to take for a long walk in the woods. It's not a dick/tit measuring contest. Get what you're comfortable with. My recommendation is the Winchester Super XP (SXP) as it comes with two barrels (long for hunting and short for home defense) and three chokes (Full, IC, Mod). Another good choice is the Mossberg 500 All Purpose Field, Classic, or Turkey. Otherwise a used Remington 870 is fine, but I would avoid purchasing a new one due to some serious quality issues in recent years. If you're on a budget, buy a Maverick 88 model 31010, All Purpose. Yes it's cheap. Yes it works. Yes it's reliable. Just realize you won't be flexing on anyone with one. But, again, it's not a dick/tit measuring contest anyway.
    • Inexpensive .22LR for small game and plinking. Make sure you buy copper ammo for it. If you want a semi-auto .22LR buy a Ruger 10/22 and be done with it. It's basically the Honda Civic of guns and you can't go wrong with one. If you want a bolt-action either buy a Marlin XT-22 or Savage Mark II. You should be able to source a used .22LR in good condition as well if you're short on cash.
    • Decent big-game rifle If you can't afford to invest in quality for both a gun and a scope buy a quality optic first. Yes, this might seem counter-intuitive; however, you can move the scope from one rifle to the next and it's very unlikely that a new hunteshooter is going to be able to out-shoot even a cheap factory rifle for quite a while. There are tons of options for rifles. Some great options for guns which should be under $900 out-the-door at your local gun store are (in no particular order other than the first two are my favorites): Tikka T3x, Weatherby Vanguard, Bergara B14, Howa 1500, Ruger American, Savage 10/110, and a used Remington 700 (I don't recommend buying a new one anymore). Any of these guns will do you just fine. Don't buy some tacticool shit for hunting like the Ruger Precision Rifle. Don't get me wrong. It's a great gun. It just weighs 10 pounds. You'll find most of the tacticool rifles are excessively heavy or they have shorter barrels for urban combat (which results in lower muzzle velocity and reduces range). Another option is the Mauser 18 which you can get for ~$400 on sale at the moment and is criminally underrated. If you're on a budget the Mossberg Patriot, Thompson/Center Compass II, Savage AXIS Line and the Remington 783 will all be out the door for under $450-ish. They should all get the job done which is the most important thing. Also I only listed bolt-action rifles as I don't want to deal with the what-is and what-isn't questions of legal semi-autos in California.
    • BUT WHAT CALIBER?1!!?//? Ever want to see nerds fight on the internet? Talk about calibers. If you want a gun which can take any of the big game in California I recommend the following calibers: .308 (usually the easiest to find ammo for), .30-06, 7mm Remington Magnum, 300 Win Mag, .270 and 7mm-08. If you're recoil sensitive, a new shooter, or guns still make you nervous, I recommend the last two as the first two you look at--especially the 7mm-08 as it's criminally underrated. All of those calibers have in-stock lead-free ammo right now at the closest gun store to me (I actually called and asked) and can be used to ethically harvest deer, elk, antelope, bear and sheep. There are tons of other options which people are going to happily point out which are way less common (e.g. 28 Nosler) or rounds which are great, but apparently sold out in lead-free at the moment (like 6.5 CM). While I'm sure tons of people have a ton to say about calibers, no one starting out hunting needs to know that the .30-06 can be filled with slightly more powder than the .308 so you get higher velocities from hand-loads, or that the .300WSM is technically better than a .300WM out of barrels shorter than 24 inches. It literally does not matter. Buy any of the above calibers and you're good to go. Ignore the haters. In a similar vein, anyone who tells you 300 Win Mag is "too big" or "overkill" for a mule deer either a) doesn't hunt or b) probably believes a .50 BMG can kill you with the shockwave from a near-miss. Also don't buy a caliber that you're afraid to shoot. Once again, this isn't a dick/tit measuring contest. I once owned a .300WSM and legitimately hated shooting it. That was a regretful purchase. Don't make the same mistake.
    • Quality Scope. Buy Vortex. Hell, buy used Vortex and if you get a lemon just send it back to them under the lifetime warranty (no, seriously, it's that easy). Vortex is the best value per dollar with the best customer service and also the best Reddit presence (seriously--just ping vortexoptics with questions and you'll get answers within a day). When it comes to scopes there are tons of options with dozens of different reticles and I will try and briefly give some answers. To cover the focal plane debate, please watch this video from Vortex (I swear I don't work for them). My personal preference is First Focal Plane because I know what my subtensions are and I can accurately judge holdover regardless of my magnification as a result. As for MIL/MRAD vs MOA, here's a video that explains it really doesn't matter. Just make sure your scope adjustments match your reticle. Personally, I shoot MOA because 1 inch at 100 yards is easier for me to visualize. I've shot MIL/MRAD in the past and swapped. As far as reticles go, buy one that you can understand and use with appropriate markings. Don't buy one you don't know how to use (or aren't willing to learn how to use) or that just clutters your field of view. Finally, in regards to magnification, do not overdo it. You're not shooting a deer with a 338 Lapua from 2 1/2 miles away. The low end should be 3x or 4x and the upper end should be 12 to 16x. On my deer rifle I shoot a Viper PST Gen II 3-15x44 FFP with the EBR-7C MOA reticle. With this setup I am comfortable taking shots past 500 yards which is beyond the range most new hunters should ever consider. Now to avoid being accused of being a Vortex corporate shill, I should add that when I shot F-Class my rifle scope was a Nighforce NXS and I've owned Zeiss in the past (before I swapped to FFP) and was quite pleased with the quality of both. They're also more expensive than Vortex so there's that. Oh, and my .22LR has a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire scope on it which has worked flawlessly for 7(?) years now. Seriously. I treat it like shit and it's held zero the entire time. 5/7 would recommend.
    • A shooting stick. For a large part of California, shooting from a bipod attached to a rifle isn't practical. Whether it's sage or tall grass, it just isn't happening. The Primos Trigger Stick is what you want. There is also the tripod version. I own both and use the trigger stick more often. If I had to choose one I'd go with the monopod because it's easiefaster to deploy.
    • Good binoculars. Again, I'm going to suggest Vortex. A solid pair of 10x42s or 8x42s are what you're looking for. I rock Diamondback HDs 10x50s I bought used. Keep in mind, these aren't really the binoculars you'll see people "glassing" with. These are more for the mobile hunter and general scanning. If I were to buy a single pair of binos for carrying around, I'd swap my 10x50s for Diamondback HD 8x42s and it's what I suggest you do if you're starting out (again, buy used if you can). In the past I've owned Bushnell binos and they worked for getting started, but quickly left a lot to be desired. While Bushnell quality is a lot better than it was in the past, I still recommend Vortex because I've got personal experience with using them far more recently. Also just ask around. Tons of people have good binos they don't use and will usually part with for way under the replacement value.
    • A pack. If you're backpack hunting you're going to have different requirements than someone stand hunting within drag distance of their truck. If you want a good pack which will work for most big game situations, buy the ALPS OutdoorZ Commander frame and bag. I owned one. It held up pretty well although it's not waterproof. For the price it's pretty much the best you can do. I upgraded to an Eberlestock Just One Pack J34 with the J2SD Spike Camp Duffel and it's been good so far. I'll be really testing it this fall though. If you don't need a full pack, I use a ALPS OutdoorZ Pathfinder with the Turkey call and game bag. Granted when I purchased it the two came together so they may have since modified it, but I still recommend it. Keeps all your stuff handy. I actually use it for turkey hunting. If you just want a simple day pack (or want to mix the daypack with the Pathfinder), I bought this a few years ago at Big5 for like $50 and it's held up just fine. The buckles are a PITA but at least they don't break.
    • Good knife. I actually don't know that much about knives. I use a Havalon Piranta Edge because I'm too lazy to sharpen blades. I've skinned a lot of game with it and love it. My buddy has the Buck Knives 141 and another carries a Buck 110. As long as the knife is sharp it will work. If you don't know how to sharpen a knife, get the Havalon or similar knife with replacement blades.
    • What about archery???!?1 If you want to start bow-hunting--which you absolutely should--you really need to go to an archery shop and talk to the employees. Tell them your budget (make sure they know you need a full set up for that amount and not just a bow). They'll have you test fire bows and measure your draw length. Help you figure out what draw weight you're comfortable with. You'll need to find the bow that works for you. It's not the same as buying a gun. Bows are much more individual. Don't be embarassed because you're shooting a 40lb draw. The more you practice the more it will go up. I shoot a 60lb draw and have zero intention of ever going up. It's more than enough. Once again, hunting is not a dick/tit measuring contest. Don't believe the hype that you need to have an 80lb pull bow. If you've never shot a bow before don't waste your money on a flagship. I currently shoot a Bowtech Revolt X which is basically sex in bow form. It's also overkill for someone who has never even shot a bow before. If you have a limit of $500 for bow + arrows, the Diamond SB-1 Edge is a "good enough" solution and I know two people who have taken deer with one. It's not great, but it'll do the trick to get you started. If you need the recommendation on a bow shop in the San Diego area the only shop you need to go to is the Bow N Arrow Shop in Lakeside. Make an appointment and tell Bruce your situation. He will go out of his way to help you. One other thing: crossbows are considered firearms in California in relation to hunting seasons, so basically a crossbow can't be used on an archery tag during archery season.
    • Camping equipment for backpack hunters. Check Craigslist for good deals. I've had the same REI tent and stove for years. Also, look at camping's sidebar for all the camping-related and gear-related sub-reddits. They have far more on this subject than I could ever hope to fit here.
    • Cooler. If you're going to be traveling a distance and need to keep ice cool for several days I can personally recommend RTIC because I'm too cheap for Yeti, but Yeti are very good coolers as well. Otherwise Igloo or Coleman coolers work just fine. Don't let the marketing fool you. You do not need a Yeti/RTIC if you're just starting out and not leaving the cooler in the Arizona sun for 6 days straight. Hell, if you're going to be home within an hour you don't even need a cooler. As for size, 65 quarts fits a quartered mule deer and ice.
    • Clothing. I'll be honest. If you're just getting started and on a budget just go to Walmart and buy some cheap camo. Don't overthink it because it will work just fine. This might be sacrilege to the guy wearing $800 worth of Sitka clothes, but at least your credit card isn't max'd. If you can't afford Sitka, but also don't want to walk into Walmart, just look for King's Camo or Badlands. I wear a mix of stuff personally and it's mostly First Lite and King's Camo. Of course, if you've got the money, Sitka, First Lite and KUIU are great. Buy a good pair of gaiters. Also wool is your best friend. I have a pair of Kenetrek gaiters and they're great. You should also wear gloves even in the summer months. It will save your hands from getting cut up.
    • OnX. This is a requirement for public land hunting in California. I will write more on it later. Want to know where to hunt? Well, this is the answer.
  • And some nice-to-haves
    • Laser Range Finder This isn't a requirement to get started hunting, but if you've got the stuff above and especially if you're bowhunting it's a very nice thing to have. Personally I use a Vortex Ranger 1800 but the Impact 1000 is a great starting point. In the past I had a Leupold RX-1000i TBR that was great until it decided to die on me. Bushnell makes great rangefinders and if you're doing archery on a budget this is a good option. Also check classified ads for golf. Sometimes you'll find some deals on rangefinders there.
    • Binoculars for glassing and a tripod. This is especially true for anyone hunting SoCal where you need to glass. You want a good 15x56 or 18x56 and a solid tripod. I'm currently waiting on these Diamondback HD 15x56 to come in stock where I usually buy my optics so I can replace my less-than-great Nikon 16x50s. As for tripods, I have a Vortex Summit SS-P and it works pretty well. I use it for my spotting scope and it's admittedly a little light for that, but that can be offset pretty well by hanging weight from the balance hook.
    • Spotting scope I use a Vortex Viper HD 15-45x65 (angled). It's great and I can count points from crazy distances while also being light enough I don't mind carrying it. I love it. The only other spotting scope I've used is a Swarovski and the thing was incredible--but it also costs as much as 1.5 KLR650s.
    • Game Cameras Since I'm going to assume most people are hunting on public land I recommend you just buy some cheap Chinesium generic cams. Game cams are prone to wandering off for unknown reasons on public land. Obviously if you're hunting private property you should have a safer investment, so feel free to spend some more on actual quality cams. As for everyone else? Cheap Chinesium it is. Use lithium batteries with the cameras to maximize the cheaply-engineered battery life and a cheap 32GB class 10 SD card. It works out to something like $52 a camera between cam, batteries and SD card. You're going to lose them. Don't splurge here unless your daily driver is a Bugatti.
    • goHUNT Insider Membership. In reality, this isn't actually that useful when you're first starting out if you're only sticking to hunting inside of California. Once you decide to expand your hunting horizons it's super valuable. They also have great articles on their site.
    • 4WD Vehicle There are a lot of rough desert service roads--especially around San Diego and Imperial Counties--which open up a lot of public land for you to hunt, but they can only safely accessed with 4WD. Is this a requirement to get started hunting? Not at all. Should you buy a 4WD vehicle just to go hunting? Probably not if you ask personalfinance. Is it nice to have? Absolutely. Even better if it belongs to your friend. I can't begin to tell you how many scratches my truck has from going off-road...
    • Private Property. If you can't afford it find someone who owns property and ask for permission. You'll be surprised how many landowners will agree--especially if you bow-hunt. I've got permission in the past to hunt on private property in San Diego. How did I manage it? I asked. That simple. Tons of hunters complain about not being able to hunt on private property but have never even tried asking. Just get used to getting rejected. Thankfully my dating life prepared me well for this.
    • Hunting Buddy. More on this later. Suffice to say friends are good to have.

Part 2: Tags, Stamps, and Points. Oh my!

  • Tags 101
    • What are tags? Tags are a permit to harvest a specific big game animal. They're sold in addition to your regular hunting license.
    • Why do I need them? You need tags to harvest deer, elk, pronhorn antelope, bighorn sheep, wild pig, or black bear.
    • How many tags can I have? You are limited to two deer tags each year and one each of elk, antelope, sheep and black bear. You can purchase an unlimited number of pig tags.
    • How do I get tags? Pig tags and black bear tags are sold "over-the-counter" (OTC) This means you can drive to your local Big 5, buy a tag, and then head straight to the woods and try and harvest an animal. Well, in theory. If 1,700 bears are harvested statewide, the bear season is closed; however, that hasn't happened since California banned bear hunting with dogs c. 2011. We haven't even come close since then. Some deer tags are OTC but most are not. Most deer tags are considered premium deer tags and allocated via lottery, then there are restricted deer tags (these are less common), and finally unrestricted deer tags. I will cover these differences in the section on deer. ALL Elk, Pronghorn, and Sheep tags are awarded through a lottery drawing. None are sold OTC in the state of California.
  • Stamps/Validations 101
    • What are stamps? Stamps are endorsements on your license similar to endorsements on a driver's license. They entitle you to certain privileges. In California, these privileges are exclusively related to bird hunting.
    • Why do I need them? If you want to hunt upland game, waterfowl, or other migratory birds, you need the appropriate stamps. There are three stamps. If you want to hunt waterfowl (i.e. ducks) you need the "California Duck Validation" as well as the "Federal Duck Stamp." If you want to hunt upland game (i.e. turkey, dove, pheasant or quail) you need the "Upland Game Bird Validation".
    • How many stamps do I need? You just buy the stamps once per year. If you're going duck hunting, buy the two validations and you're good to go for the season. Same as the Upland Game stamp. It's valid for the same dates as your hunting license.
    • How do I get stamps/validations? Same place you got your hunting license. You can order it online or go to a licensed retailer. It's super easy. There is no limit or lottery or anything.
  • Points 101
    • What are points? Points, or preference points as they're technically known, are awarded for each year you enter a tag lottery and don't win the tag. They exist in an attempt to award a limited number of tags in a fair manner which rewards people who have tried for the tags the longest
    • Why do I need them? It's practically impossible to draw elk, pronghorn, sheep and a large number of deer tags without them. I'll explain them more in depth later, but suffice it to say for now each point increases your likelihood of getting drawn.
    • How many points do I need? That depends on the species and the hunt. It can be as low as zero or one to as high as the current maximum of 19 points on next year's application.
    • How do I get points? Say it's your first year and you entered for a Bighorn Sheep tag and didn't win. You'll be awarded a point for this entry. The next year you'll have one point. If you don't win in your second year, you'll get another point and so on. Once you win your points zero. You can also elect to just buy a point by noting "Preference Point Only" instead of entering a specific drawing on your application. However you can not choose both "Preference Point Only" as well as entering a drawing. It's one or the other.

Part 3: Finding Public Land to Hunt On

It's not that hard. I swear. There are 38,197,000 acres of public land--38% of the entire state--open to hunting. Is it hard to find GOOD hunting land not overrun by other hunters? Yes. That's why you scout and get used to hiking quite a bit. It's not impossible, however, and that's what matters.
Use OnX. No seriously. It's worth every cent. Every single time a new hunter asks me where to go my answer is OnX. I don't want to do a write-up on every amazing feature this software has to offer because they have a YouTube channel where they do it better than I ever could. That being said, there are a few things worth mentioning for people who are too lazy to watch some YouTube videos.
First - you can use OnX from both a PC and smartphone. I'm mentioning this because quite a few people I know were surprised when I told them the website works from PC. It's way easier to plan a hunt on a 27 inch monitor than a 5.8 inch phone. The website and the phone app are synced so if you add a marker to the website, it appears on the phone (and vice versa).
Second - check out the layers library and use them. As an example, you should have the layer for recent fires turned on when you're looking for bear, deer or elk opportunities. Again, I'm not sure why people don't realize this is available.
Third - use markers and colors which make sense. When I first started using OnX, I would mark everything in the most haphazard fashion. It's not useful. I suggest keeping it simple. If I think an area might have access I drop a yellow "A", if I confirm that it has access I drop a blue"A" and if it turns out there's no getting there I set a red "A". It makes it easy to read quickly. However, do whatever is easy and works for you. Just make sure you understand what you're looking at and you're consistent with it.
What kind of land can I hunt on? Legal Disclaimer: You should verify with all respective agencies and landowners that hunting is permitted at specific locations because I'm not responsible for you going to jail etc.
  • BLM Land. OnX marks BLM land in yellow. BLM land typically allows dispersed camping without permits. At least in Southern California deserts, the BLM has decently maintained dirt access roads throughout. On most BLM land throughout the state you can also target shoot however this needs to be checked with the local field office first. Also, if you see a "No Shooting" sign they're talking about target shooting. You can still discharge a firearm during the lawful pursuit of game. Just a protip.
  • National Forest. Most National Forest property can be hunted on and if hunting is prohibited it will be clearly marked. OnX marks National Forest property in green. Roads are typically maintained pretty well through National Forest property. A large number of the roads throughout Cleveland National Forest in San Diego can be access with a front-wheel drive compact car and a sufficiently brave driver.
  • Wilderness Areas. Most Wilderness Areas can be hunted. There are cases where there may be an endangered animal (such as a butterfly here in San Diego) which results in some acres being closed to any and all access--not just hunting; however, this is exceedingly rare and it will be clearly posted. It's important to note you can not operate a motorized/mechanical vehicle (including a bicycle) within the bounds of the wilderness area. You will be walking in and out. Don't drive your jeep down a fire road through a wilderness area. Just because the road exists doesn't make it OK. Follow the rules. There will be signs telling you not to do it. It's pretty hard to claim ignorance on this one. OnX marks Wilderness Areas with a dotted pattern. You will notice this wilderness area is part of a national forest from the color of the lower layer. See? Learning has occurred.
  • Some State Wildlife Areas. OnX marks Wildlife Areas in light blue. Each Wildlife Area has specific regulations set by the state. Thankfully those regulations are easily available online as well as very useful write-ups about each area.
  • In Imperial County specifically you can hunt on IID Land. I'm adding this here because the Imperial Irrigation District (IID) permits hunting on their properties. You will probably be stopped by an IID officeemployee at some point. They're friendly and usually super helpful. There's just a pretty big crime problem in El Centro right now where farming equipment (including things like full-size tractors) are getting stolen and IID actively checks their properties for suspicious people. All that being said, it is not the standard for private water to allow hunting. Vista Irrigation District in San Diego leases their land to hunters through the "My Country Club" program at $3,000 a year. However, it's still worth checking where you live. You can just call the local irrigation district office and ask.
  • Private Property with Permission. You can use OnX for this as well. It helps you locate property owners. I don't want to doxx anyone so no screenshot, but every registered property owner is available to you. If you find a piece of land you wish to hunt you can use this information to find the owner. My house sits on an 1/8th of an acre and if I click the parcel it has my full name (including middle initial weirdly enough) as well as address. And, no, you can't hunt on my tiny slice of land I call home. The HOA would definitely frown on that.
  • Hunting Clubs. This is particularly true for upland game bird or duck hunting. A lot of hunting clubs own or lease property they maintain specifically for hunting. If you can afford it, this is a good option and it's a great way to meet other hunters. Think of it as the Country Clubs of the hunting world.
  • Private Property through a Guide Service. Again, this will cost you. However, most guide services have agreements with property owners to hunt private property. There is no shame in hiring a guide either. If you want to get better at a hobby it's common to pay for lessons. Why is hunting any different?
  • SOME National Recreation Areas and National Preserves / Lands administered by NPS. In Southern California, the big one which permits hunting is Mojave National Preserve (which is a great place for quail by the way). OnX marks it in this purple (fuchsia?) color. National Recreation Area is the same color and places such as Lake Meade National Recreation Area in Nevada permit hunting. I assume there are places in California which do but I don't know any off the top of my head and I'm too lazy to do your research for you. Just check the regulations before you go. Everything is online these days. There is no excuse. The incomplete list of places you can hunt is here because the government can't be bothered to maintain it. Case in point: Mojave National Preserve isn't even listed but hunting is listed on their own website for those wondering.
  • Military Bases. Some military bases permit hunting to the public (Fort Hunter Liggett is one). Others permit hunting only to active duty service members or retirees (Camp Pendleton). Each base has their own rules and regulations. If you're close to a base it's worth checking to see if they allow hunting and what the requirements for access are.
  • ? Some Logging Company Properties ?. I've heard this from multiple people, but I live in Southern California where this isn't really a thing. If someone from NorCal can chime in that would be great.
What Kind of land CAN'T I hunt on?
  • State Parks. There is no hunting on state parks in California.
  • MOST National Parks / National Monuments. Again, research before you go. Just realize most properties are going to be a big no-no.
  • MOST National Wildlife Refuges. There are some you can hunt on though. It's worth checking. Just understand most refuges do not permit hunting and those that do typically regulate what you can and can't hunt.
  • Private Property without Written Permission. Seriously. Don't be that guy. Oddly enough there are exceptions to this rule in other places (dove hunting in Yuma, AZ is permitted on private non-residential farming property as long as there isn't a posted sign forbidding it). But when you're in California this is a hard and fast rule. Once again: don't be that guy (or gal).
Will you tell me your secret spot?
I don't have one and none of my spots are secrets. They're all on public land. If you're really lost-in-space or just generally nervous about going somewhere you scouted through a website and you happen to be local to Southern California, just message me and I'll help out. It's really not that difficult though.

Part 4: Alternatives For When You Don't Get The Tag You Want

SHARE Hunts for Elk
This is a California-specific hunting opportunity. It's another lottery but it's an agreement between the state and private landowners to permit very regulated hunting on their properties. Each hunt is different and, again, this is a lottery so it's basically a moonshot; however, the odds of getting drawn on an elk tag is actually higher here than most general draws are with zero points. The money goes back into the program. The SHARE elk drawings close 7/24 this year. Which happens to be today. You can read more about the SHARE opportunities here. Enter through the online DFW license sales.
Leaving California (Hunting out-of-state): Since you can check out, but never leave, right? It's worth looking at other states.
  • OTC Elk - Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Utah and Washington all offer OTC tags. This will cost you $450-$750 for the non-resident hunting license and the tag.
  • OTC Antelope - Wyoming has good draw odds (some are 100%). Otherwise I think Idaho is the only state with OTC antelope tags and it's archery only. New Mexico does weird OTC tags as well, but they're only valid on private property so if you pay for access this is a good option I guess.
  • OTC Sheep - Literally does not exist. You can do a ranch hunt in Texas if you want to harvest a sheep. Otherwise sorry.
  • OTC Deer - Arizona late season (DecembeJanuary) offers OTC archery hunts for both Mule deer and Coues deer with success rates as high as mid-30%. You will see TONS of deer. This is an excellent opportunity for archers. Otherwise, Idaho offers OTC Mule Deer and some 2nd/3rd season hunts in Colorado are OTC. Other states have leftover tags that are first-come, first-served. Montana and Arizona fit this category.
  • DISABLED VETERANS SPECIFICALLY - You can hunt in Idaho on a non-resident disabled veterans permit for cheap. A license + OTC elk tag + OTC mule deer tag is something like $100. Plus you can punch your mule deer tag on a black bear if you really want to. If you fit the criteria this is an absolutely amazing opportunity.

I noticed a mistake!
Great! Comment below and I'll fix it. We're all human and I don't pretend to be infallible.

Triggered a year after we broke up

Met a guy, Brady, on tinder. He seemed really nice, funny, he was white British - Asian British mixed (it’s relevant later). His family was quite well off and a little showy, which kinda turned me off. I was doing my masters when we met and he was unemployed, living at home. He made comments that my masters was just in biology - I don’t think he liked that I was doing well. He also did a a lot of things that I hadn’t - that could be considered posh like “skiing holidays, fencing” etc and expressed some disappointment that I wasn’t into that. I kinda blew it off. He never failed to mention how expensive his private school (that he graduated from 8 years prior) was. Also he was convinced that my closest friend, who he had never met, was racist because he was half white (she was British Asian). I was like what on Earth, you don’t know her. She’s NEVER mentioned anything like that. Anyway, I’m not mixed but due to my complexion a lot of people think that I am and I was often mistaken for part of his family. He kinda fetishised this. Again, it didn’t seem like a big deal then so I ignored it.
Apart from all this it all was going pretty well for about a year. He got a job in the military so then we began to do long distance. I needed to find a job and it wasn’t looking good (needed a visa to stay). This did put a lot of pressure on the relationship. Eventually I did get a job. I went to visit him at his military base. Something told me, girl you need to snoop. I did. He was on all the dating sites and was calling me his ex. Said things like I read a lot, am obsessed with animals, nerdy and that I can’t ski (apparently a deal breaker). All the things I thought he liked about me he didn’t. Left his ass, he tried to get me back but kinda was like well you are an immigrant (which is why he cheated) and left it.
Fast forward 11 months. Not a word from Brady although I’ve heard on the grape vine he had a new gf. It was hard for me getting over him as I felt bitter that I had stayed in this country for him but I’m dating someone new. Brady finds out. Looses his damn mind. He rings me so much that my phone dies in 1-2 hours from all that vibrating. Threats interspersed with begging for me back in letters, phone calls, emails, even e cards. I find out he’s been reading all my mail, that’s how he got my home address and my work address. He sends gifts. He must have got his brother to bring back this crisp type I loved from South Africa. There was about 10 packets and one was open. In it was a USB named “blackmail” with nudes of me and an video that was of him crying for an hour and a half. Boxes of sweets. Sent a bundle of clothes including underwear - none of this was mine. He made A1 collages from puppy pictures in magazines - the kinda thing I made when I was 8. I have about 100 handwritten letters or cards. He called the guy I was dating and you can imagine what he said, she’s a slag, she’s not a virgin etc. He contacts my mum saying the same thing - I think he liked the idea that I was a conservative Asian (I am Asian but we aren’t a conservative family) and that I’d be disowned. Mum ignored him. He threatens to come to my house - sends me a picture of train tickets to where I live. I’m now scared to stay at home despite my 4 housemates and am terrified.
When his grandma died, I sent a sympathy card to his mum. This was like only a month in to the stalking and I felt bad. At the time I thought he would get over it. I had liked his parents and nan. He made out like I had killed his nan because he said he was busy calling me instead of being with her when she passed.
He said that he failed out of military school because of me and that he would contact my grad school and get me fired from my PhD. He sent the same threatening letters and pleading cards to my office. Many of them said how he’d get me deported, I was a nobody and he was a British citizen (as if it was like a Nobel prize) and he’d ruin my future. I was there legally. He was obsessed with the idea that I wouldn’t get back with him because of his race and that I wanted a “pure bred” because I liked golden retrievers. He said I was a racist, that it would come back to haunt me and i would have no future. None of this was true. I didn’t want to be with him but that was because he was a cheater, I thought he was a racist or weirdly obsessed with my race AND he was harassing the life out of me. I’d done nothing wrong. But I was still terrified. It was back in my parents home country.. this is the kind of thing that could get you fired.
I went to London with my dad and family. My sisters boyfriends sister put up a picture of us on Instagram, she wasn’t private. Three minutes later Brady had seen it and made a new account to message me saying I’m coming there. So now he’s watching my sisters bfs sister who wasn’t close enough to have blocked him, she probably didn’t know that this was even happening at the time. Every time I blocked a number or account, he got a new one.
I didn’t do anything for 6 months. I felt so guilty - I felt bad for his parents, worried he would loose his job and I was scared of him. I felt bad to worry my parents - this was their biggest fear. I’m 10000 miles away and some crackhead is after me. Eventually I started bawling infront of everyone at work when yet another letter arrived. I was too scared to go anywhere, I was terrified of unknown numbers. My supervisor marched me to the police. I told them everything and they said you have three options
A) we do something about it NOW but in courts it can take over a year and you’ll probably have to see him
B) we call and give him an off the books warning
C) nothing
I said let me think about it for two days. I’d tried before to call his parents before but he always managed to intercept. I found out his dad had got a new job through LinkedIn after previously working from home. I called him at the office and I told him everything. Well, his parents had thought that all this time - we were still together and that I didn’t like them anymore, hence why I hadn’t come to see them. I said if there’s anything else, I will go back to the police. His dad apologised profusely and said obviously I don’t want you to go the police but I understand and I will do my best with Brady.
I didn’t hear from him for about a year. Then sporadically heard emails from him asking for some personal details probably under the guise that they were needed for his job (you have to disclose ex’s and he probably had to explain what happen since I did go to the police). I replied to some but not others. I’ve communicated maybe 3 x over the last 4 years. Very brief, bare minimum. If the military really did need those details, they could call me them self.
Fast forward. It’s now 4 years later and I’m on holiday with my current partner at my mums place in my mums home country. Christmas Day arrives and there’s a beautiful painting of my sister and I, from my favourite photo of us, delivered by DHL to my mums address. It’s amazing and arrived on Christmas Day. We aren’t big on gifts so naturally now the whole family is arguing about who did the painting and why they wouldn’t admit it. The next day we’re driving to the beach and I say “I hope it wasn’t crazy Brady who sent that painting” and everyone’s like “no don’t be silly, it must have been dad and he forgot he’s done it”.
Well well well. Jokes on me. A week later he Facebook messages my mother asking if we got his gift. Crazy Brady, hope to never hear from you again, let’s not meet ever.

Section 1: Basic Information
Video link

Your first airsoft gun is the most important purchase you will make in airsoft. As your only weapon it must be versatile, reliable, affordable, reasonably high-performance, easy to work on, and compatible with as many accessories and upgrades as possible. This means buying an Automatic Electric Gun ('AEG') assault rifle or Sub-Machine Gun ('SMG'); forget about sniper rifles, pistols, gas guns and other restrictive exotica until you have more money, more experience, and at least one backup weapon.
To play airsoft it is HIGHLY recommended that you have the following items:
•A basic AEG(NOT LPAEG)
•Magazine (often known as a high capacity magazine, which holds around 300-500 bb’s)
•At least 2 batteries (one in the gun and one in reserve
•a basic charger (most places will charge the barriers for you if you are renting gear, so you do not need to commit to buying anything just yet)

All airsoft AEG’s come with one mag out of the box, but it is HIGHLY recommended that you have 2-3 of these while you are playing. If you have not played airsoft before, DO NOT BUY A BUNCH OF GEAR AND A GUN BEFORE RENTING! You don’t want to buy a full set of gear to go out and play to not like the sport. I always recommend renting a gun first, to see if you actually enjoy the game. Most sites allow rentals for about 20-30$ in the US.
Eye Protection is the most important thing in airsoft. All airsoft sites require you to wear goggles/mask while playing. For more details look at section 8.

2. How much does Airsoft normally cost
Video link

Although airsoft is markedly cheaper than other shooting sports, it's still an expensive hobby. Site fees vary greatly but will typically exceed $25 for a day's play. It is reasonably common to spend in excess of $400 buying, upgrading and accessorising a single airsoft gun. Gear and clothing can be similarly expensive. It is possible to play airsoft very successfully with just basic equipment, but even the cheapest possible equipment required to play airsoft safely will still cost you a minimum of $100. If you want a competitive advantage, or to play more advanced simulation games, you should expect significant additional expenditure.
It is common for users to approach airsoft with unrealistically low budgets. If you have less than $100-150 to spend, you are not realistically in a position to play airsoft. We will not compromise your safety by recommending you skimp on personal protective equipment. We refuse to recommend Low Power Electric Guns ('LPAEGs'), spring pistols and other ultra-low-budget airsoft guns because their performance is so poor, and their life expectancy so short, that they represent a false economy. You may still be able to afford to rent gear at an organised airsoft site, but not for more than a handful of games at most.
FAQs:
1. I think I can afford to play. What's the next step?

2. Why are you lying to me? I can easily find airsoft guns that cost less than $100.
In airsoft, as in most aspects of life, there is a minimum price below which a product cannot be made fit for purpose. It is possible to buy something approximately gun-shaped for less than $100. Do not confuse this with the ability to buy a gun that will be sufficiently powerful, reliable and long-lived enough to play airsoft with. LPEGs, spring pistols and ultra-low-budget airsoft guns are utterly inadequate for airsoft play and will break rapidly, at which point you will be back to having no gun and will also have lost whatever you spent. In addition, you still need to buy suitable Personal Protective Equipment ('PPE'), which is an absolute prerequisite of play and not free. THE ONLY EXCEPTION to this rule is spring shotguns. The tri-Shot ones. They shoot anywhere from 3-6 bb’s at a time and most shells hold about 30 rounds. These shotguns are only optimal for CQB arenas and highly urban fields. They have extremely limited range so keep that in mind.
3. What is the difference between a high capacity magazine and a mid capacity magazine?
High capacity mags have a door at the top of the magazine that you drop your ammo inside. There is a wheel at the bottom that you wind to feed your bb’s into the top of the magazine. These mags hold normally 300-600 bb’s, depending on if it’s an AK mag or a M4 mag. Mid capacity mags do not require winding but require a speed loader to be loaded properly. These mags hold anywhere from 100-200 bb’s.

3. Best Beginner Rifles (AK/M4) for 150-250$
Video link

To get into Airsoft you need to have a decent budget. Although most good beginner-intermediate guns cost anywhere from 100-250$, you still have to purchase: bb’s, magazines, batteries, and a charger. Some guns come with a wall charger and a battery, but most users recommend throwing away the wall chargers that come with beginner AEG’s because they are of poor quality. Most users and airsoft players recommend starting airsoft with an M4 or an AK AEG. M4 AEG’s are highly customizable and can be upgraded with basically anything. Lancer Tactical IS NOT included on this list for various reasons. Horrible QC, bad internals and falsifying safety ratings. Please do not ask me why they are not on there. The current COVID-19 Pandemic is still straining the supply chain, so a good portion of these are labeled as out of stock. Things are still slowly coming in from Taiwan, so be patient. Commonly recommended choices are:

  • CYMA AK Series -$130 - CM028, CMO40, CM045, CM048, and CMO28S) are clones of the original TM AK-47’s and AKS-47’s , and they include a high cap magazine (500-600 rounds). These are the cheapest AEG we recommend, and are generally considered reliable, upgradeable, and reasonably versatile. However, their all-Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene ('ABS') plastic construction makes them relatively fragile. For improved robustness we strongly recommend spending slightly more to purchase a Glass-Filled Nylon Polymer ('GFP') AR-15 or a steel AK.
  • Guay Guay G2 Combat Machines -$207 - Guay Guay has recently come out with a more updated version of their "Golden standard" AEGS. These are still relatively new and have had reports of poor quality mosfets. But other than that, the Gen2's are a superior upgrade to their Gen1 counterparts. Upgraded internals, and a better exterior allow for a better quality AEG. An intermediate/high end equivalent of these would be a VFC or a Krytac. These are not as outdated as the gen 1’s, but they still are classified as outdated when it comes to performance.
  • Guay Guay G1 Combat Machines -$150 - Guay Guay CM16s are the gold standard of beginner airsoft guns. Built from a surprisingly tough GFP, CM16s are reliable, affordable, accessible and therefore absolutely ubiquitous. If possible, purchase one without Guay Guay's somewhat unreliable electronic trigger control system. An intermediate equivalent of these would be a GP or ICS AR-15. Guay Guay's are considered outdated when it comes to beginner rifles, and there are better options out there. I.e CA, ICS, etc. These are still included as these are serviceable at best.
  • Classic Army Skirmish Series -$180-200 - Classic Army's AR-15s are a relatively new entry to the market, and are equivalent to a slightly upmarket version of Guay Guay's CM16s. An intermediate equivalent of these would be a G P or ICS AR-15. These feature a mosfet that allows you to switch to 3 round burst or 5 rebound burst.
  • APEX Skirmish Series -$95-100 - OEM'd by Classic Army, Apex's Fast Attack AR-15s are a relatively new entry to the market, and are equivalent to Guay Guay's CM16s. Versions with GFP and metal receivers are available. An intermediate equivalent of these would be a GP or ICS AR-15.
  • ICS Sportline -$180-200 - ICS' Sportline AR-15s are effectively a re-shell of their excellent regular guns in a GFP receiver. They retain the convenient split gearbox system of the regular guns. An intermediate equivalent of these would be an ICS AR-15.
  • Maple Armories Marauder -$250 - Made from high density polymer but has an excellent set of internals which has been proven to be better than the Guay Guay lineup. This weapon series is on the more expensive side but has comparible internals to the VFC Avalon series.
  • E and C MK18 Series -$162 - These are not really common in the US, but are popular in places like Canada and the EU. The internals on these have been quite good and QC has been almost top notch for something that is under 200. There are other models available in the US, but are way more expensive.
  • Arcturus M4 Series -$161 -Arcturus is a relatively new brand in the airsoft market, but has come out the gate strong with their M4 series. This series has a microswtich installed, which is uncommon for other models in this price range excluding Classic Army. It also comes with 2 magazines which is great for beginners.

4. What to avoid when playing Airsoft
Video link

Airsoft is an honor sport, when you get hit, raise your hand high and display your dead rag. Also yell “HIT” as loud as you can so the other player who is shooting you knows that you are dead. Not displaying your dead rag can lead to being shot more than you want to. Calling someone else’s hits are normally frowned upon as you’re going to cause problems on the field and airsoft drama is not worth it. If someone is suspected of cheating, call a ref/marshal over to observe the player. When you are in the field/game area, DO NOT TAKE OFF YOUR EYEPRO!! EYEPRO is the #1 important thing in airsoft. If a bb hits your eye, you more than likely will be blind. Keep your EYEPRO on at all times while in the field. If you are fogging up, walk off the field. Avoid overshooting other players, once you see a dead rag or a red rag come up, or hear “HIT” stop shooting them. Dead men tell no tales! If you are dead, and a teammate asks where you got shot from, simply say: “dead men don’t talk” and walk back to your respawn.

5. What to bring to your first airsoft game(not as a rental)
Video link

So you’ve finally bought your gun and gear and you’re heading out to your first game. As mentioned previously, you want to make sure you come prepared. As well as your AEG, you want to make sure your batteries are charged and you brought an extra magazine or two. You also want to bring WATER! Staying hydrated is one of the most important things you need to do in airsoft. Being dehydrated will ruin your day and cause problems for you. Also make sure to have a good amount of bb’s for the day. it is highly advised that you wear boots while playing, running shoes can get dirty easily and there will be mud somewhere on the field that you will end up stepping on and getting wet. An extra pair of socks is also a good idea!

6. What weight bb’s should I use?
Video link

This question is very common with a lot of newer players. LPAEG’s (Löw powered Airsoft guns) and Walmart airsoft guns use .12 gram bb’s. DO NOT RUN THESE IN AN AEG! This bb’s are cheap and will break the internals of your rifle. You don’t want to throw your money away do you? I didn’t think so. The lowest weight you can use in your replica is .20 gram bb’s. There are a lot of brands out there for bb’s: Elite Force, BLS,, HPA, KWA and so on. All of them are good brands to buy from. If you are planning on playing indoor, most users will recommend .2-.28 bb’s for the best range and efficiency. If you are planning on playing outdoor, using .28’s and higher is optimal for the best range. Just keep this in mind: the heavier weight, the slower the bb travels.

7. Can I start Airsoft as a sniper?
Video link

You can do whatever you want, but it is highly advised by myself and most other users advise players to not start out sniping. Sniping is an expensive virtue and will take a lot of money and time for you to get a rifle that shoots far. Buying a stock sniper will mean you have to put money and parts into it, as the only “good” stock sniper rifle is the SSG24, and the Silverback SRS. The popular airsoft youtuber, Novritsch, has made sniping extremely popular with noobs as he shows a lot of action and gameplay with his guns. Keep in mind that being a sniper is not all action and takes patience and time. His videos are short for a reason. You do the math.

8. What Eyepro/lower face protection is recommenced?
Video link

Eyepro is the most important thing in airsoft. Airsoft is a sport that requires you to have eye protection on at all times while on the field. Lower face protection is required for most players under the age of 18 in most American fields. Anyone over the age of 18 can normally just get away with goggles, but you don't want to have to go to the dentist do you? Didn't think so. There are different types of eye protection for airsoft, ranging from basic shooting goggles, to face masks that protect your face. There are a lot of different goggles and masks out there, but here are some of the most populamost recommended items. Any eye protection you use MUST BE ANSI 787.1+, otherwise you cannot use them! DO NOT USE MESK EYE PROTECTION UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES! They are not anzi rated, and their have been hundreds of cases where someone will shoot someone with mesk eye pro, and the bb will explore on the outside of the google, allowing the bb fragments to get inside an eye.

  • Pyramex I-Forces (Slim) -20$ - These goggles are one of the most common eye protection recommended because they are really hard to fog. They are also the cheapest eye protection that this list will have, but these are really amazing goggles. These are full seal but these are not as big and bulky as some others.
  • Revison Desert Locusts -$30 - These are another amazing choice when it comes to eye protection. A little more pricer than the I Forces, but provides more protection around the face. Has fine lens curvature and the lenses adjust automatically to shifting or variable light conditions. Please note you can buy these new on their website/evike, but they cost 50-60$ new.
  • ESS Land Ops -$85 - Issued by the U.S Army, these goggles are another excellent choice. Features exceptional fog resistance, particle filtration, and comfort. These can also be found on eBay and military surplus stores for cheaper, but keep in mind of scratching.
  • Smith Optics OTW -$180 -These no doubt are the most expensive goggle on this list, but these goggles feature a fan inside of the goggle, which allows for no fog at all. The low profile housing of the fan does not interfere with the brim of a helmet. If you want something really good, \*buy once, cry once.\*
  • Dye i4/i5 -$100-250 - These are the best option when it comes to full face protection. This was originally designed for paintball, but has been adopted by airsofters as well. The special venting and google coating allows for zero fog. I have had one for 8 months and I have yet to deal with any problems. The prices vary depending on color, but you can find one used for roughly 60-70$. There is an updated mask, the Dye i5, which has an updated back strap and different colors.
  • Oakley M-Frames -$120-130 - These are often used by milsimmers as these offer great eye protection in a minimalist setup. Often used by the US military, these offer great non-fogging and are super lightweight.
  • ESS Crossbows -$40-80 - The ESS Crossbow Suppressor is the first spectacle frame designed for use with ear cup hearing protection and communications devices. Featuring Z-Bend Geometry, the frame's ultra-thin temple arms help keep noise out by minimizing the effect on the padded seal of ear cups. The slim temples eliminate the hot spots and pressure points that commonly occur when normal eyewear is worn under ear cups.
  • OneTigris Mesh Mask -$15-20 - The most common mesh mask in the market, and the most affordable one also. Made out of steel and nylon, this mask allows for maximum comfort as it is has nylon fabric cheek sides.

9. What is a “MED”?
Video link

If you’ve played airsoft before or are just hearing about this for the first time, a “MED” or minimum engagement distance is utilized in airsoft. Most airsoft guns have semi, and fully automatic. Most fields in the US, do \*\*NOT\*\* allow full auto within 40-50 feet. Imagine coming around a corner and getting shot with 10 bb’s because the person around the corner didn’t switch to semi. This isn’t Call of Duty, spraying your bb’s all over the place will achieve very little, if not anything. When you get closer than 40-50 feet, switch your AEG to semi. Airsoft, for the most part doesn’t hurt, but getting shot 10-20 times in a row certainly will. Don’t be that guy who full autos people from 10 feet away! It’s being an asshat, and will probably get you kicked out!

10.GBBR’s
Video link

GBBR(Gas Blow-Back Rifles) are the hyper-realistic guns. If you have a larger budget and would like a more realistic experience these are the guns for you. Not usually recommended as starter guns because of the cost of gas and accessories, but not to be entirely ruled out for a select group of people. These guns are high maintenance, but most would consider the work to be put to the background in the face of the utter satisfaction of using one of these guns. Check out GasBlowBack for more information on this topic.

11. The Search Bar
Video link (THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE)

The search bar is a tool that is at the top of this sub that is used to search for a post or topic. This feature is not used by any beginners as they will probably ignore this guide and ask the question anyways. Most questions have been asked before and you will find your answer. To use the search bar:
A. Open reddit
B. Click on airsoft
C. Using your eyeballs, look at the top of your screen
D. Using your fingers, type in whatever you are looking for (I.E BEST BEGINNER SETUP)
E. Using your eyeballs, look at the results
F. Realize that most people will just ignore this guide and continue asking the same questions every single day.
G. Profit!

12. Orange tips, can I take them off?
Video link

Orange tips are required for retailers, but you are more than welcome to take them off after you receive your airsoft gun. Just note by doing so you will void your warranty. Also please do not take your airsoft gun out in public and follow basic gun safety. Please check your local state/county rules before doing this though.

13. Airsoft Youtubers
Video link

A lot of users will watch certain youtubers and get a impression of the hobby that does not exist. Remember: Their job is to get views and entertain you, they cut out the parts that are boring. Clickbait content is what most beginners watch and please note that cheaters in airsoft are not as common at they make them to be. There is of course great content creators out there that don't just make clickbait and I implore you to go look for them.

First Contact - TOTAL WAR - Part 208

[first] [prev] [next]
The day was hot and dry, the sky a clear blue without a hint of clouds, the yellow star turning the entire reddish desert into a furnace. The convoy was pulled over at a small abandoned enclave, the cherry red muscle car surrounded by four heavily armored APC's, having the 50 gallon tank refueled by the tanker truck that was part of the convoy. The tanker truck had been attacked and graffiti sprayed on it. Such arcane statements as "MANTIDS RULE HUMIES DROOL" and "FREE KIKAKIK!" and "REMEMBER DOVER SPIKE!" on the sides in multicolor paints that had been sprayed by small task focused little drones.
Standing at a wooden table were two holograms, a Lanaktallan in a black tuxedo, a human with bad facial scarring and heavy cybernetics, and a massive bulky cyborg made of chrome, black durasteel, and ragged flesh.
There were also two humans dressed completely in black with swords sheathed on their backs sitting in the shade a playing a complex tile game as they ignored everything around them.
I have only the best ninjas, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd thought to himself before turning back and looking at the holographic map. It was of a complex military base in the middle of a dry lake. Strangely enough satellites couldn't get a view of it, all attempts at sat-survellience led to nothing but a blank spot of desert.
These Terrans are indeed crafty, but the plans for the F4 Phantom will be mine, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd thought to himself, rubbing all four hands together.
"So, with the hat and ID, the guards will mistake you for a three star Space Force general," his evI-liaison said in the heavy officious and stern accent. "This will enable you to get by security. Herr Otto will add a transponder spoofer to your implant that will identify you as a high ranking Space Force officer, so this will fool the computer and allow Herr Otto to access the computer and base communications."
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd nodded, staring at the map of the Space Force research and development site. He had to admit, it seemed much more impressive than even the R&D planets he had conducted espionage on. The location said "You do not belong here unless you are wildlife", the buildings were all squat, hardened to withstand an atomic blast, and drab and said "You are not welcome in this place" and the sheer amount of roving guards, guard towers, heavy fences, and security made Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd tremble with excitement.
Not one of the facilities he had infiltrated over his hundred and fifty years of life was this heavily guarded.
"Any response is at least two hours away for fast attack hovercraft, so even if the alarm is raised, you should be able to escape quite handily," Heinrich stated. "Once you're inside, Herr Otto will guide you to where they keep secret plans."
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd straightened up and thought for a moment. "So, there might be more technological plans than just for the Phantom?"
"Yes, Herr Ya'ahrd," Heinrich said. "As you see, Terrans are very security conscious, so technical plans are never stored on computers, but rather on blue paper with white lines called, of course, 'blueprints'. The file room should contain much data that might be of interest, but you have a limited time window within the blueprint room."
"Of course, of course," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said, putting his fingertips together. He nodded slowly. "Grab what I can as fast as I can then make my way out where my vehicle will be waiting."
"Yes, Herr Ya'ahrd," Heinrich said.
"Major Bloodfist and I will wait in the car. We will have identification stating we are typists and secretaries," the massive cyborg rumbled. Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd turned the cyborg, known as Chrome Cortez (Real Name: Juan Sqwakiki Lymner), and nodded excitedly.
"I should definitely take my grenade launcher and that wonderful shotgun weapon with me," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd mused.
"Yes, Herr Ya'ahrd, it is a legal requirement that individuals within the nation of the Hamburger Kingdom be armed at all times," Cortez rumbled.
"All right, we're ready," Ya'ahrd said, turning to the ninjas. They saw him looking, threw something to the ground, and disappeared in the smoke. Ya'ahrd heard the car door slam and nodded to himself, knowing that they were now hiding somewhere in the car.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd trotted over to his car, nodding to his two bodyguards. He had to admit they were impressive. Grey skinned Rigellians just rippling with oiled muscle, wearing crossed studded leather straps across their chests, leather pants with openings to expose their gray buttocks cheeks, and heavy leather belts around their waists where they kept knives and pistols and all manner of gadgets.
He was very impressed with them as they ignored him in order to watch the surroundings for any potential Terran Intelligence Agency assassins that might lurk about to capture or kill him before he could damage their war fighting ability against the Unified Council.
Before he got in the car he checked the back seat.
Yup, looked empty. Perfect.
He rubbed his upper hands together in glee as he opened the door and got in. Those ninjas were the perfect investment.
Getting in the car he watched as Major Bloodfist and Chrome Cortez got into the passenger seat and into the back seat with the invisible ninjas respectively. His datalink pinged and he took the call.
"All right, Herr Ya'ahrd, I'll be providing comms for you to the gate. After that Herr Otto will be assisting you. Just drive to the gate and show your ID," Heinrich said.
"Excellent work, minion," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said. "When the Lanaktallan people take over this planet I'll put in a good word for you."
"Thank you, Herr Ya'ahrd, you are as generous as you are wise and capable," Heinrich said.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd drove through the desert in silence until he was only a few hundred yards from the gate.
"All right, there's a movement verification system in place, Herr Ya'ahrd," Heinrich broke in as Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd parked his bright cherry red automobile so that his minions could refuel it. He had driven fifty miles and the fifty-gallon tank was almost empty.
"I understand," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said. He got out and stretched.
"Now, just like we practiced," Heinrich said.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd faced the gate, only a few hundred yards, a long run but not impossible for a highly trained agent such as himself who had spent months exercising in 1.25G to acclimate himself to the punishing gravity of Terra.
He leaned forward at the waist, put all four of his hands behind him at a 45 degree angle, looked down at the ground, and galloped forward as fast as he could in order to the fool the gait-identification system into thinking he was one of them.
"OK, Herr Ya'ahrd, I'm losing communications, so I will hand you over to Herr Otto," Heinrich said as he got to within fifty yards of the gate.
The running pose was difficult, but obviously working as Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd panted out "Thank you, Heinrich."
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd slowed down within ten yards of the gate, breathing heavy with all four lungs, straightening at his waist, and letting his arms hang down at his sides naturally instead of being held behind him at a 45 degree angle.
"Comrade Ya'ahrd?" the voice was a harsh accent that oozed with authority and menace and made Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd's flanks tingle with excitement.
"Yes, Otto?" Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said quietly.
"All right, just go up to the gate and show your ID. Your hat, jacket, and ID should get you past the guards," Otto, the Digital Sentience hacker told him.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd trotted up to the uniformed humans at the gate. They all wore solid olive drab green uniforms with strange patches on the tops, shined black boots, and metal helmets painted OD green with a white stripe around them and "MP" on the sides.
"Identification?" One asked, giving Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd an intent suspicious looked.
"General Ya'ahrd," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said, lifting his head up and holding out his identification.
"Hmm," the human said. He handed it to the guard inside the shack made of wood and glass. "Check it out, Private."
"Yes, Sergeant," the human inside said.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd wondered what caste of humans they were.
After a moment the ID was handed back.
"Welcome to Area-51, General Ya'ahrd," the gate guard said, pressing a button so the striped wooden pole raised up.
"Thank you, human," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said and trotted onto the base.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd was in awe at what he saw. All the Unified Military Forces bases he had infiltrated before, most of the troops just sat around or spent their time lacklusterly doing makework. Here they drove around yelling to one another, ran from place to place in large groups in perfect time, carried packages, worked on vehicles, or paid urgent attention to papers in their hands.
To Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd is was frighteningly efficent.
My work could change the war, he thought to himself. Much more than acquiring the budget for a Senior Military Most High's personal account.
*"*Comrade Ya'ahrd, go into the building on your left. I will direct you to the hidden elevator that will take you down to the research sub-levels," Otta said.
Ooh, underground research facilities! Only the Unified Research and Development Council were allowed those! That the Terran Space Force would have their very own underground facility tells me that this place is indeed an important facility, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd thought to himself. The information I get here could turn the entire war around!
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd smiled to himself as he punched in the keycode number Otto gave him and got into the elevator.
When I get back, they'll see who's the best Superspy and who isn't! Why, I might even be asked to speak at the Unified Espionage Council meeting! he thought. He spent a bit fantasizing about how important he could become and how every Council being would want to speak to him and hear about his adventures deep in enemy territory on Terra itself!
The door opened with a soft ping and Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd trotted out.
It looked properly mysterious. Big boxes, some wooden crates, some metal boxes. A thick white mist a few inches thick covering the floor, mysterious stencils on the walls, old feeling concrete.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd followed Otto's instructions, twice hiding from human guards that moved through the dimly lit hallways, their features entirely obscured by gas masks. Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd had to admit they were quite creepy looking and those weapons looked extremely dangerous.
Finally he reached the room where the technical blueprints were stored. Following Otto's advice he quickly found the rolled up blueprints for the F4 Phantom Aerospace Multi-Role Craft. He spread it out and looked at it.
The stats horrified him. A max atmospheric ceiling of 100,000 feet! Twin engines! Mach 2.5 at under a 125 feet! Multiple weapon systems including the capability to carry atomic weapons! It was capable of operating as a parasite craft and could even land on a stretch of flat ground instead of a specially prepared runway with a magnetic assist system!
Worse, it could be piloted by a single being! Two beings made it even more efficient!
Yes, yes, if this gets into production it would be a disaster for the Unified Military Council's aerospace elements! It carries more weapons that any two aerospace fighters we posses! Worse, it doesn't require a high energy reactor, it can do all of this off of fossil fuels as well as being made of lightweight materials, meaning that it would be invisible to modern scanners!
He rolled them up and tucked them into his sash, then looked around. He took down several other blueprints and looked at them, gasping in shock.
The V-2 Rocket System made him curl his tendrils in horror. It didn't depend on anti-gravity systems or fusion thrust but instead highly refined fossil fuels! It was a disaster waiting to happen! Lanaktallan air defense systems wouldn't even be able to see them!
Another blueprint was for a system called the Challenger Tank. Nervously he spread it out and looked it over. While at first glance it looked crude, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd realized its small size, high speed, and massive gun made it a dangerous weapon system.
That too went into the tube he grabbed and put the rolled up blueprints into.
"Almost out of time, Comrade Ya'ahrd," Otto warned.
"No, no, no, I need more of this," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd moaned, grabbing some random plans and putting them in the tube. "This place is full of incredible military research!"
If the Terrans get these into production the war is lost! Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd thought to himself, grabbing another plan down.
It was a heavily armed and armored rotary aircraft called a HiND! Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd moaned in fear looking at the specifications. He rolled it up and put it in the tube, then slung the tube over his shoulder.
"Get out of there, Comrade Ya'ahrd," Otto told him.
"Lead me out, Otto," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said, taking control of his fear.
He followed the direction carefully, finally reaching the elevator. Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd was trembling in excitement and fear. This was his favorite part of any espionage mission.
The escape.
At least Yu'uMo'o wasn't there to sabotage him and take all the credit like the last three times that Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd had managed to gain valuable intel.
"Comrade Ya'ahrd, it appears that there is some difficulty. Quickly, ascend to the roof instead. I had Comrade Chrome Cortez put your jetpack harness up there," Otto suddenly said.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd pressed the cancel button and then the "Roof Access" button.
"What is happening?" Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd asked nervously.
"It appears that the Space Force Military Intelligence Division suspects you may be trying to break into the most secure research facility in the Confederacy," Otto said.
"Could I shoot my way out with my grenade launcher and shotgun?" Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd asked eagerly.
"Sadly, no, Comrade. You will have to flee via jet-pack. They have, umm, anti-grenade fields and anti-shotgun armor," Otto said. "Real cutting edge high tech stuff, but it Confederate Intelligence."
"Hmm, makes sense. I will ascend to the roof and make my dramatic escape from there!" Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said eagerly.
Then he waited, humming a song he had heard on the car's radio and tapping the cardboard tube with his fingers. After a few minutes the doors pinged open and he trotted out onto the roof.
The military base was a hive of activity. Aerospace fighters roared overhead, using vertical takeoff and landing systems to quickly set down. Tanks clattered around, pointing their guns everywhere. Entire dozens of Terran soldiers with rifles ran in perfect unison and formation sweeping the areas.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd spotted his jetpack harness and galloped over to it. He strapped on the flank harness, which had four thrusters, one over each hip, to provide him with lift, then strapped on the backpack section, which would provide him with forward momentum. He put on the helmet, which was bright chrome so it would blind anyone looking at him as well as reflect any attempts to use RADAR or LIDAR on him, then pulled the controls around.
He checked the roof real quick to make sure he wasn't leaving any ninjas behind, then activated the jet pack.
With a roar it lifted off.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd gave the traditional Terran escaping spy salute to a defeated enemy. He held out both middle fingers of his lower hands and called out "SO LONG, SUCKERS!" and jetted forward at the incredible speed of nearly four minutes per mile. The wind ruffled his hide and the speed almost made him dizzy.
"Comrade, you have a helicopter coming in! You'll have to fight them if you want to escape!" Otto called out.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd looked around, reaching around behind him and grabbing his Terran Burgerland make grenade launcher.
There it was, approaching rapidly!
"Comrade, when it..." Otto started to say.
Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd held his tongue between his teeth, curled his tendrils, and aimed his grenade launcher, squeezing closed all but one eye. He hit the trigger and the grenade launcher kicked hard.
The grenade that hit the front of the helicopter kicked harder and the helicopter burst into flames, falling to the ground in a shower of debris.
"Ooooor, you can do that," Otto said.
Following Otto's directions he landed just outside the gate, next to his cherry red car. Chrome Cortez and Major Bloodfist helped him out of his jetpack as the Terran Space Force guards stood on the other side of the fence and fumed impotently.
"You were all stimulating opponents, but alas, you faced the pride of the Lanaktallan Unified Espionage Council," Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd said. He felt somewhat bad for them. "Fear not, against lesser opponents you would have prevailed! Sadly, you faced me, Ya'ahrd, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd, Secret Most High Secret Agent Spy, who has..."
Cortez and Bloodfist checked their watches and waited for the Lanaktallan to finish his villainous speech.
When he was done, Ba'ahn Ya'ahrd chuckled at how obviously demoralized the Space Force soldiers were as he got into his car.
As he raced off into the desert to the next refueling stop he checked the back seat and smiled.
It was still empty except for Chrome Cortez.

Correcting misconceptions: The writing history of Sword Art Online

I'm seeing a lot of false info being thrown around about the timeline of SAO's writing. People tend to be confusing the web novel and light novel publication timelines. I'd like to correct that.
SAO began life as a web novel, or WN. For those who don't know, a "web novel" is just what Japanese netizens call original fiction published online in a serial manner. It's no different from how stories on a site like FictionPress.com operate.
The writing timeline goes as follows:
Aincrad arc: Reki Kawahara wrote this from late 2001 to early 2002 for the Dengeki Novel Prize writing contest. The story exceeded the word count limit that contest allowed for, so he just published it on his own website.
Fairy Dance/Phantom Bullet/CalibeMother's Rosario: I don't have exact dates for these, but these arcs were written from spring 2002 up through sometime in late 2004.
Alicization: The big one. This is the one we have definite start and end dates for. Kawahara began writing Alicization in January 2005, and wrapped up the story in July 2008. This is specifically noted by him in the Volume 18 afterword.
Moon Cradle: After finishing Alicization, Kawahara wrote approximately 10 pages of material for this arc. And then he abandoned the story because...
February 2009: This was Kawahara's big break when he officially became a published author. This was when Accel World Volume 1 was released in bookstores in Japan. From then on, much of his efforts over the next decade were focused on getting the LN volumes out and overseeing the anime adaptations of Accel World and SAO.
April 2009: This is when Sword Art Online began getting published as a light novel, or LN. You can see the publication history of the novels in Japan here.
All told, the Sword Art Online story from Aincrad to the end of Alicization was published in web novel form from late autumn (probably November) 2001 to July 2008, and in physical light novel form from April 2009 to August 2016.
The LNs differ from the WNs in some ways. There are some minor plot points that are changed, and additional material added. I only know of two major plot points that were changed during the transition from WN to LN: The first was in Aincrad
The second major plot change from the WNs to the LNs was in Alicization
Another change are additions to the light novels that were not in the web novels. In Volume 10 of the light novels (published in July 2012), Kikuoka goes on a really long rant criticizing George W. Bush and the invasion of Iraq the U.S. defense policy towards Japan, and he has some sharp rebukes of Japan's Constitution regarding the selling and development of military weapons being banned. None of this was present in the web novel. Anime-only watchers will not know any of this because the anime didn't adapt this at all.
(Amusingly, Kikuoka's criticisms, which are from a story set in 2026, are now invalidated in actual reality because the Abe government amended the Japanese Constitution in 2014 to legalize the export of military weapons abroad)
After the SAO light novels had finished publishing Alicization, Kawahara revisited the bare-bones 10 pages of material he had written for Moon Cradle. He ended up expanding this to a 2-volume story arc and these novels were published in 2017. Ronye is the main character of this arc, the story is written completely around her perspective. I had to wait until Yen Press published the official novel in English in April since the fan translation of the SAO LNs ceased after Volume 18. The final Moon Cradle light novel, Volume 20, will be published in English next month in August.
SAO is currently in the Unital Ring arc, which is the first true post-Alicization story arc. This started publishing with Volume 21 in December 2018. It is currently on-going, with the most recent volume 24 having been published in May 2020. This is pretty likely to be the final, true end to the SAO saga, especially because one major Accel World character has appeared in this arc, and my guess is that it will probably tie the SAO and AW timelines together.
Basically, the takeaway is that the anime adaptation of SAO we're all watching right now is still catching up to old material. The end of the Alicization story is 12 years old at this time as of July 2020.
And Alicization was supposed to be the ending of the franchise. When it was originally a WN, the subtitle for the arc literally said "The Last Episode" in English. Hence why you're getting that Avengers Endgame vibe from all the old characters returning for the big finale.
I am far from an expert on the SAO franchise. This was the result of pulling together information I've seen from discussions online, and searching for publication dates for the novels. The guys on the SAO Wiki and the mods at swordartonline know far more than me, so if I've made any mistakes, please feel free to correct me. Thanks for reading.
Bonus: Here are some old character designs & illustrations for Sword Art Online that date back to the WN era when this was being published on Kawahara's website in the early 2000s. Holy Evangelion influence, Batman!

Trying to find a main? I'll help you.

Alright guys, so after playing (too) many games of Valorant, clocking in at insanely high hours played (im on tier 45 of the bp lol), I believe that I can help you find a champion/agent to main. I am plat 3, but have experienced the joys of all elo divisions, including iron, bronze, and silver. Not like you guys will give a fuck anyways, but it's an ez flex for anybody lower than plat 3.

Alright. So describing what each agent does is boring asf. Who wants to main someone who does dashy-dashes or brings poison to kill blah blah blah men? Cringe. So, I'll actually describe what kind of person plays each agent, and you can match your personality to find a match. It's like a dating sim. Lets start.

Jett: Are you a diamond 2 smurf who plays in bronze and only uses the Marshall/AWP? Then this is your agent. She has dashes and dogshit smokes. Only use the smokes for yourself. Dashes are reserved for jumping over low-sensitivity gamers and killing them before they can move their mouse across their desks to look at you.
Omen: Look up who flexinja is and you'll want to (try to) be an omen onetrick. Most omen's either use their teleports whenever they can, or never use them at all. When it comes to low elo omens, their blinds are only reserved for allied teammates. (By the way, if you get bind and you're an omen otp, if you don't fake teleport thru 1 of the 2 tp's then you're not doing it right.)
Phoenix: He's like a breach that heals and has worse flashes. You should pick this guy as your main only if you know what a 90 degree angle is. Most low elo people do not know what basic geometry is, so they will pull out a flash, peek a corner, then left click, blinding himself and whoever peeked with him. Or sometimes they'll panic and flash the wrong way. Also, don't worry: you are still entitled to a sage heal, even if 3/4 of your kit heals you because you can use the excuse of "its utility, sage, just fucking heal me" to get her to left click on you.
Raze: Flies over people's heads just like jett, except you can control where you're going, the things that make her fly do DAMAGE, she has more things that go boom, and an ult that is just a bigger boom. Not only is the enemy going boom, but the enemy's mental also will go boom. Trust me. I got styled on by a raze and almost summit smashed my monitor. If you want to be able to kill teammates that don't listen to you, then pick this agent. (My favorite raze thing to do is to satchel them once at the END of the round if they didn't get shot so that it does enough damage to their armor not to kill them, but to severely annoy them).
Reyna: Choose her if you have an obsession with military technology. Specifically an A-10 Warthog. If you like to hear things go brrrrt, then use your ultimate on reyna with an odin and spray to your heart's content.
Sage: Choose this character if you like to heal everything except everybody besides you. This character is mainly used to troll your teammates without doing damage to them. What I see a lot of sage's do is use a slow orb on the site that her team is trying to enter, which is so genius, because she knows that there is a 1% chance that the enemy will push the site that she and her team is pushing. She's just trying to account for all possibilities, especially the 1%'ers. But be careful; there's something that happens with all sage players that I call "the sage syndrome", where you will either only top frag or only bottom frag. There is no in between. It happens in every single game that I play in. Absolutely no exceptions.
Sova: This agent is for Chris Kyles' who like to snipe people across the map. If you think you are really good at sniping people, you can try to go for a blind ultimate from across the map to get a pick to secure your team the round. (That's what I see most of my sova's do, anyways.)
Viper: This agent is very fun. I think. She has an ultimate that gives you x-ray vision. (I think.) I kind of forgot that this agent existed, so I don't really have much to say about her. If you like playing off-meta (in any game), I think that this agent might be for you...?
Breach: This agent is for you if you are very determined on using your utility in order to provide your team with an advantage. It doesn't matter if you flash or stun your entire team; as long as you get that one dude at the back of C site in haven, it's worth it.
Brimstone: I mean, if you're into it, you're into it. No judging here. And I think you and I know we're not talking about Molly, his smokes, or his ulti ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Cypher: If you like to control vision of the enemy, this is not your agent. This agent is purely for the purpose of making the enemy think that you're wallhacking with your tripwires. Buy a gun with high penetration, set up a tripwire, and wallbang the shit out of them. My only enjoyment when playing cypher is seeing someone asking "how the fuck did you kill me thru that wall?" in all chat. His "smokes" are just meant for more wallhack/ESP accusations, as they make sound cues when enemies pass thru them. This agent is for people who like to sit all the way back and just wait for people to fall into their laps. To show people that you're a real cypher main, you should always use a tripwire on B site split on the garbage can. If you don't do it, you're probably first-timing cypher.

Thanks for reading my shitpost lol, hope that you had something close to a laugh

Notes and Highlights of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s Live Update July 16, 2020

Notes and Highlights of Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear’s Live Update July 16, 2020
Notes by mr_tyler_durden and Daily Update Team
Note: We may need to paraphrase, but the notes are accurate
Watch here:
Headlines
Summarized (Full) Notes
  • Alright everybody, it’s 4 o'clock, and we’re gonna be pretty serious tonight. Let’s remember even as we talk about some very serious threats we face, we need to have faith. Faith that we will get through this and we will get through this together. Today I think I need to say it more than anyone else. We will get through this, we will get through this together. (Andy signs in ASL) Say it with me: We will get through this, we will get through this together.
  • What we are seeing across the country is alarming. Not just escalating cases, but devastation. FL hospitals have run out of ICU beds. They are scrambling to change people over. This is when people die because the system is overwhelmed. This isn’t March, this isn’t April. This spreads fast enough, when you open too early and don’t have the right rules in place. People are going to die that would not have otherwise died. Look at it, it happens. It’s happening now, even at a time where we have the ability to test more and prepare. They aren’t the only ones. AZ and TX, are bringing in refrigerator trucks cause they’re running out of room in the morgue. They had 90+ deaths yesterday, and they’re 1.5x the state of KY. That ought to convince everyone of the seriousness we face and what a critical moment right now is. There is nothing that means we can’t end up like any of those states if we don’t do the right thing. Like KY many other states are following suit with mask mandates. This time in Alabama. Governor Ivey And I are on different ideologies, we probably don't see eye-to-eye on a lot of things, but you know what? We’ve made the same exact decision because this isn’t political. She’s issuing the order similarly to how we did, but they’re seeing an escalation worse than ours at the moment, she said “but we can’t let [her state is Alabama], end up like other states” But today in KY we face, possibly, the gravest threat I’ve seen since we’ve started this. So since we started this, we saw a virus that was, at one point doubling far too fast, we saw a curve that could have overwhelmed our healthcare system but at all times we knew what it would take to stop this virus. Social distancing and now face coverings and we were able to put the types of rules in place to flatten our curve. Imagine if we didn’t do Healthy at Home, where we could be right now! We had to shut down everywhere so it didn’t shut us down like it did Florida before. And it can happen to us again. But today the Attorney General asked a court in Boone County, which is having an all-day hearing and even taking testimony on things like unemployment which wasn’t an issue in the case, but he is asking for every single order to be overturned and to not allow my office or me to put any orders in in the future that would help protect you and everyone else. If we have to later, no ban on travel and the places that are so scary, no rolling back areas that might be spreading it. It’s truly frightening. I know this AG is trying to claim this is not what he is trying to do but these are the words he has asked the court to put into an order: Temporarily enjoined (which means we can’t) from issuing or enforcing any portions of any Executive Order. No Rules. Companies wouldn’t need to sanitize, no hand sanitizer. No masks, just the Wild West. That’s terrifying. In the middle of a worldwide pandemic. And it would mean we would fail. It means people will die. I never thought as a day-to-day as Governor that I would have to deal with life and death issues and I have felt every death that we have had in this virus. And one of the things that keeps me going is I know we would have so many more. I’m sure that I have made some mistakes, I keep thinking of Washington’s farewell address where in his second to last point he admitted he had made some mistakes. But I've done everything I can to protect the people of KY. I lie awake at night almost every night wondering how many people we’re going to lose or if we are going the same direction as other states. This would remove the authority that virtually every other governor is using to battle this virus. There is no question. There would be no rules. You don’t have to sanitize your hands, the virus spreads. That's a basic scientific fact. So if we see more cases, Goldman-Sachs wil say we will lose $10B dollars. And that’s just without masks. Multiply everything else on top of that. I don’t see how we get our kids back to schools if there are zero rules to keep the virus from spreading. And we lose more people. No school, harmed economy, and more death. I don’t want to go back and forth with my own Attorney General but I will fight every day for the lives of Kentuckians. Even if it creates drama I don’t want, even if it takes away time, and it does, I have half my office out today because of it. I’m gonna do what it takes to protect the people of Kentucky. But folks, this is wrong. This is REAL REALLY wrong. Don’t play politics with the lives of people. The request made wants to eliminate the ability to enforce any of the Healthy at Work requirements, any of them. No capacity limits anywhere. Fill up a stadium, full bars. We know how deadly that can be and that’s just plain irresponsible. I want you to know what this would do, would do more than just destroy the economy, cost lives, and keep kids from getting back in school. You know the orders that are included here? Also include expanding workers compensation for workers that have to quarantine as a result of exposure. That means our first responders, active military, and grocery store workers. They wouldn’t get workers comp when they came down with the virus they got for protecting us. Gonna leave them out in the cold. It would also eliminate my waiver of copay, deductible, and cost-sharing and diagnostic testing fees for private insurance. It would charge people for taking these tests. These are the facts, and that’s the truth. And we face this at a time when our cases continue to rise. We have another day with over 400 cases. Today we are reporting 413 cases, bringing our total to 21,083. Know how quickly this can get out of hand? FL had over 77,000 cases in 7 days.
  • Positive cases today: 413
  • Probable cases (from full numbers PDF): 965

  • Total tests conducted: 507,197. We worked a lot to get there, we’re going to work on expanding our testing even more
  • Total hospitalized (from full numbers PDF): 2,842
  • Currently hospitalized: 418 Those healthcare workers that are trying to take care of them? We don’t want to leave them in a hospital where no one has to follow the rules needed to keep them safe. It puts every single one of those workers in jeopardy. To our healthcare workers: I appreciate you and I am going to fight for you. I am going to try to make sure that it is as safe as it can be for you because we appreciate you
  • Total in ICU (from full numbers PDF): 1,030
  • Currently in ICU: 92 fighting for their lives.
  • Positivity rate: 4.38% up about 2% from 2 weeks ago. When it gets over 5% it’s going to be a real concern. Moreover we are seeing more kids test positive every single day. I got a call from the CEO of Norton, they have more pediatric patients right now than they ever had during this virus. I believe 2 are in the ICU. Today we have 13 new kids under 5. 2 of them are 2-months-old. So, these kids are counting on us everyday to do the right thing.
  • Total recovered (from full numbers PDF): 5,500
  • New deaths today: 5
  • Total Deaths: 650, but remember deaths follow cases. All our numbers will tell you that you see, more death. If we have fewer restrictions based on science, in place, and it spreads even more, you know what to expect from that. We’re in the rotunda, and we put up a wreath when the first 200 people died, and I’m looking at it right now. How many more of them must we hang?
  • New deaths by county: 92 Jefferson, 83 Jefferson, 90 Knox, 91 Fayette, 59 Knox
  • All losses are a loss for Kentucky. Let’s light those houses up green and let’s ring those bells at 10am. This is a reminder that we are thinking of the Kentuckians we’ve lost, their families, and their communities. It’s the color of compassion and renewal as their souls move from their bodies to a better place.
  • Racial breakdown of all cases: 77.25% Caucasian, 12.93% Black or African-American, 3.21% Asian, 5.86% Multiracial
  • Ethnicity breakdown of all cases: 84.27% non-Hispanic and 15.73% Hispanic
  • Racial breakdown of all deaths: 81.12% Caucasian, 14.94% Black or African-American, 1.48% Asian, 2.46% Multiracial
  • Ethnicity breakdown of all deaths: 95.87% non-Hispanic and 4.13% Hispanic
  • Long Term Care Facilities: 51 new residents and 47 new staff positive from yesterday, and 3 more deaths, 7 new facilities. 2,180 residents, 1,150 staff, 414 deaths, 224 facilities.
  • That’s the tough news. Can I give the hopeful news? I got to do a video yesterday for Dorothy Krause. Here’s Dorothy, I got to wish her a happy 100th birthday! Turning 100 in a non-pandemic situation is a feat. I’m sharing Dorothy’s story today because she also beat COVID-19. She resides at the Forum at Brookside in Louisville Friends and family say she’s a pillar of patience- i can use a little of that; and positive thinking, I could use a little bit of that too, it’s something I think we can all admire. Happy Birthday Dorothy, it’s special, thank you for your fight, for giving us hope, and I hope you have enjoyed these special days.
  • More good news? We are highlighting some local governments that we communicate with regularly, because they are on the ground doing what it takes to beat this virus. But we know they are hurting. Like our government budgets and their budgets have been devastated, so we set aside $300M CARES ACT funding for local governments. Since last week we have announced $21.4M and today we’re approving $5.5M in CARES ACT Reimbursements for 22 counties in Eastern KY. Every dollar is needed. Boyd County in Ashland where we lost one of our early, younger Kentuckians. Elliott, Fleming, Lee, McCreary, Montgomery, Pike, Rowan, Whitley, and the municipalities of Booneville, Coal run, Hazard , Fleming-neon, Flemingsburg, Lynch, Middlesboro, Mount Sterling, Owensville, Pikesville, Presonsburg, and Stanton. Funding can be used to reimburse payroll expenses for public safety, PPE, cleaning supplies, all those things we asked the government to do in our rules and restrictions. So there are more applications there are in, and we expect more announcements soon. Let me just say this isn’t money given this is money earned- our localities are doing a great job. We need you now more than ever. This is crunch time. This is the time we determine how many people we lose. This is the time we make sure everybody is wearing a mask so we can try to have our old normal, Save our people, Save our economy, Save our possibility of school
  • Update on Unemployment. It has been difficult. It has been mostly been difficult for the people who filed and have had trouble getting it. It’s been difficult for the state, because we had a starved system, we have a 20 year old system, a loss of lots of regional offices, and layoff of staff. And then we had the most claims filed ever. By a lot, in a very short period of time. But our job is to fix it. We hired Ernst and Young. They added 300 additional people to help us. To date they processed 10,635 claims. And they’re getting up to speed. There is a learning curve but they’re getting through the system. They’ve increased their hours from 8 to 10 a day. We expect to increase the numbers as they go. They’ve added Saturdays. We are expecting a pace going forwards of about 4,000 cases a day. The number of claims that are out there, the numbers are tough, because many people have filed a couple of times. And then we have claims that might be filed maybe even two months later but it’s based on what date they list on it. So we have 5,060 remaining claims that were filed in March. 4,000/day can get you caught up pretty fast but we need you to answer the phone. I think we are still getting a 50% answer rate. If we could get 100% we could help a lot more people. I think for April we got about 24,000 Claims that were filed in April. In both of those months we have about 1,000 claims that were filed later but the date goes back to the date- for when the date they are claiming their UI. There’s a long way to go, but if you think about 4,000 claims a day, and that is not including some of our folks, we can catch up very fast. The next 2 weeks we want to process a heck of a lot. So please answer the phone.
QUESTIONS
  • Testing sites in Jefferson County and how they are operating relative to their capacities -- We are at capacity at just about every testing site in Jefferson county. (at least the ones that we have a role in). It’s hard to think about that as a good thing because if you can't get a test right now, you really want one. That means people have woken up and realized the situation that we are in because there was a time we weren’t filling all of them. So we are working to expand capacity right now. Providing more kits to the major localities, to make sure we can get more people in and tested. So we are working on it and we expect to see results.
  • Has there been a reduction in testing sites? -- Statewide, the answer is no. We have 1 fewer Kroger site but that was because it was way under capacity. What we are seeing is specific locations with SIGNIFICANT capacity. Average wait time is picking up. Part of that is it being summer, and the hours are different. But Kroger has added extra hours on. And let me tell ya, they are doing their part for free. This is an incredible service but a great corporate citizen we have workers who have passed out (because it’s so hot) at these sites and they are still coming back to help and protect us. That’s pretty special and you know, they deserve better than a state with no rules or regulations. So make sure we thank you. Thank you to everyone doing the testing. We have Walmart and Walgreens, and a whole bunch of others, thank you, and keep going. I know you saw some capacity that suggested that people wouldn’t come, but they’re coming now, and it benefits all of us
  • On the mask mandate, is it still in effect? -- Yes. It is in effect. Both through an executive order and an emergency regulation. We have had no ruling to negate it, it is fully in effect and we need you to wear it. Every major health expert. Expert. Has said that if you will wear a mask, fewer people will die, we can keep the economy open, we might be able to get back to school sooner than later, and heck we might even have sports. If we don’t have any rules or regulations, we can kiss all of that goodbye.
  • What I’m seeing on compliance with the mask mandate? -- I’m actually seeing really good compliance. I'm seeing some situations where folks in retail end up taking grief they should have to. Surely we’re better human beings than to walk into a store and yell at someone that did not put the order in place. To take out our, probably, fear and anxiety of COVID on somebody. And listen, It’s not up to the person in the retail store to decide your constitutional rights, if you want to yell at me go ahead. It comes with the territory. I’m still gonna do what’s right. I’m seeing good compliance overall. What’s going to jump out is where we don’t have compliance and we have the number, the KYSAFER number (1-833-KYSAFER). How we are going to defeat this is really simple: no shoes, no shirt, no mask, no service. Some major retailers (Kroger, Walmart, Starbucks) are following our lead and everybody else should too, but you gotta do it in KY. We are doing it because we care about each other’s lives.
  • There’s an expectation or commentary about JCPS not starting with in-person classes initially? -- First we gotta see overall, what the next couple weeks look like. Very important to see if we can get back to school. The number of us who wear masks and social distance will determine that. Jefferson County given its size poses even more challenges than just about any other district. Very hard to spread out in the bus, because of the deferred maintenance, in the age of the buildings, it’s very hard to spread out kids in the classroom. They face some real significant challenges, and I want to make sure that anywhere that we come back to in-person classes, our teachers, our staff, everybody in that building, including the kids- A lot of people want to talk just about the kids that we are seeing so many more cases in kids now and they want to say rarely do kids suffer grave harm. Everyone of those kids comes into contact with an adult, and we want to make sure that any of those adults do not come to harm. So it appears to me that JCPS is being thoughtful. We allllllll want to get our kids back in school. Lord, do I really want to get our kids back in school. But we got to make sure it’s safe. And I look forward to hearing the conversations at JCPS and when a district makes a decision based on safety, you can bet we’re gonna support them.
  • Question about UI -- We’re having live calls every day. We've had thousands of calls in today. They are getting a robo answer? Ok folk may still be getting a robo answer because we have everybody processing claims. We want to move back to regional offices, but right now if I moved to do that right now, and everything that would take, it would take a week for that to happen. We’re in the middle of the crisis and we can’t just stop. We have all the people actively making the calls right now. So, if you call in, I’d love it if it means someone picks up everytime. But it would be just as nice if people would pick up when you see this number. Ok, they should be getting live calls here soon. I’m looking for the number for you, but I know it was thousands just today. I’m not satisfied with the performance to date. That’s not the fault of the employees, they’re working REALLY hard on their end. We handled 6,104 calls on the 15th (yesterday).
  • Any Masks enforcement done yet? -- Let me get you the details, I believe there have been steps taken by local health departments in various areas of the state. I think the first time they’re trying to do warnings and education. And that’s ok but we don’t have time in the battle for multiple strikes. It’s good if someone is not doing it to say, “You have to.” But then we gotta make sure everyone is doing their part. And...It’s good for the business! Having people safe, having people NOT get infected in your business, and having the ability to have even more people out. The more people wearing masks, the fewer people that are infected and the more people that can shop or do business at your facility. It is good business right now to make sure this (Beshear holds up a mask) is working.
  • How close are we having a travel ban? -- I’m having to deal with a couple court cases right now which would make that quite difficult, but I’m watching especially those big states very carefully. Let me say, we shouldn’t have to say, “you can’t go to a state that has 15,000 cases a day- including hot spots and the places you go.” We all oughta care and love each other enough to say “I’m not putting myself or my family in that situation and I’m not bringing it back, taking it to work, sending my kids to daycare, and going to church, after we have exposed ourself in that way”. Let’s be better than that.
END QUESTIONS
  • Alright folks, today I’m sorry that we face the threat we do. I cannot imagine how we defeat this virus if we’re not able to have reasonable rules and restrictions in place that help everybody, our people, our businesses, our economy, our schools. And I’m gonna keep fighting. No matter what rulings come out, I’m gonna keep fighting because at the end of the day I feel the weight of life and death. I don’t care what any score is on any decisions. What I care is about how many people we’ve saved and about doing the right thing. I came into this job with so many other things we were thinking about doing. Now I'm the guy that has to help us get through this. This is our war. This is our great conflict. And you can’t take all of our ammunition away and say, “Good luck with the enemy.” It doesn’t work that way. We know what it takes to win. We need the tools to do it. Let’s get it done. Let’s make sure we care more about the people than the letter behind our name. Thank y’all very much. And Happy birthday again, Dorothy.
